{{iPhone models}}

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are smartphones that were developed and marketed by Apple Inc. They are the seventeenth-generation flagship iPhones, succeeding the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max.

The devices were unveiled alongside the lower-priced iPhone 15 and 15 Plus during the Apple Event at Apple Park in Cupertino, California, on September 12, 2023.{{Cite web |last=Leswing |first=Kif |date=2023-08-29 |title=Apple sends invites for Sept. 12 launch event, new iPhone 15 expected |url=https://www.cnbc.com/2023/08/29/apple-event-2023-invites-sent-for-september-12-iphone-15-expected-.html |access-date=2023-09-05 |website=CNBC |language=en |archive-date=2023-09-11 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230911135331/https://www.cnbc.com/2023/08/29/apple-event-2023-invites-sent-for-september-12-iphone-15-expected-.html |url-status=live }}{{Cite web |last=Axon |first=Samuel |date=2023-08-29 |title=Invitation sent: Apple will debut the iPhone 15 in September livestream |url=https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/08/invitation-sent-apple-will-debut-the-iphone-15-in-september-livestream/ |access-date=2023-09-05 |website=Ars Technica |language=en-us |archive-date=2023-09-02 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230902040207/https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/08/invitation-sent-apple-will-debut-the-iphone-15-in-september-livestream/ |url-status=live }} Pre-orders began on September 15, and the devices were made available to the general public on September 22. The iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max were discontinued on September 9, 2024, following the announcement of the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max.

Similar to the iPhone 15, the 15 Pro replaced the proprietary Lightning connector with USB-C. They also support Apple Intelligence, which uses AI to prioritize privacy-centric functions.

Design

The iPhone 15 Pro marks the first significant redesign of the device's outer shell since the iPhone 12 Pro in 2020, with rounded edges, a subtly curved display, and back glass. The enclosure of the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max is made of grade 5 titanium, unlike the stainless steel frame of previous Pro models. The display bezels have also been reduced from 2.2{{nbsp}}mm to 1.55{{nbsp}}mm.{{Cite web |last=Sohail |first=Omar |date=2023-09-12 |title=iPhone 15 Pro Has Smaller Bezels Than The iPhone 14 Pro In Hands-On Comparison, But Only If You Do An Insane Close-Up |url=https://wccftech.com/iphone-15-pro-vs-iphone-14-pro-bezels-comparison-close-up/ |access-date=2023-10-12 |website=Wccftech |language=en-US |archive-date=2023-10-15 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231015172254/https://wccftech.com/iphone-15-pro-vs-iphone-14-pro-bezels-comparison-close-up/ |url-status=live }} The phone is available in four colors: natural titanium, blue titanium, white titanium, and black titanium.{{Cite web |url=https://www.cnn.com/cnn-underscored/electronics/should-you-upgrade-iphone-15 |title=The iPhone 15 is coming — here's who should (and shouldn't) upgrade |date=September 12, 2023 |last=Casey |first=Henry |publisher=CNN |access-date=September 12, 2023 |archive-date=September 15, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230915144400/https://www.cnn.com/cnn-underscored/electronics/should-you-upgrade-iphone-15 |url-status=live }} It is also the first premium iPhone since the iPhone X to not come in the gold color option.{{cite web |last1=Clover |first1=Juli |title=No Gold Expected (15 Pro) |url=https://www.macrumors.com/2023/08/24/apple-iphone-15-pro-colors/ |website=MacRumors |date=24 August 2023 |access-date=25 October 2023 |archive-date=30 October 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231030112720/https://www.macrumors.com/2023/08/24/apple-iphone-15-pro-colors/ |url-status=live }}

Like the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max replace the proprietary Lightning connector with USB-C to comply with the European Union mandating the use of this connector in smartphones with Directive (EU) 2022/2380 in 2022.{{Cite web |last=Porter |first=Jon |date=2021-09-23 |title=EU proposes mandatory USB-C on all devices, including iPhones |url=https://www.theverge.com/2021/9/23/22626723/eu-commission-universal-charger-usb-c-micro-lightning-connector-smartphones |access-date=2023-09-13 |website=The Verge |language=en-US |archive-date=2021-11-07 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20211107100241/https://www.theverge.com/2021/9/23/22626723/eu-commission-universal-charger-usb-c-micro-lightning-connector-smartphones |url-status=live }} Apple had already started to introduce USB-C to its handheld devices beginning with the third generation iPad Pro, released in 2018.

All iPhone 15 models have support for DisplayPort Alternate Mode over USB-C video output with HDR up to 4K resolution.

== Action button ==

The iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max feature an Action button, replacing the mute switch that was present on every iPhone before it. The function of the Action button can be configured by the user, but by default, the Action button toggles silent mode. Other options include: opening a desired app, recording a voice memo, toggling a focus mode, and actively translating speech.

In 2025, Apple revealed that the ability to trigger Visual Intelligence via the action button would be added to the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max through the iOS 18.4 update. {{Cite web |last=Peters |first=Jay |date=March 3, 2025 |title=The iPhone 15 Pro will get Visual Intelligence with iOS 18.4 |url=https://www.theverge.com/news/623211/apple-iphone-15-pro-visual-intelligence-ios-18-4 |access-date=March 3, 2025 |website=The Verge}}

= Durability =

A durability test video for the iPhone 15 Pro Max showed that the back glass was more prone to cracking after the content creator JerryRigEverything applied pressure on the back glass, which caused it to crack, saying that it was unexpected. A later video, published by the same YouTuber, cited that the possible reason for this was that the back glass is no longer glued to a metal plate; this change, and the hollow spots on the phone, may cause the back glass to crack if pressure was applied on those hollow spots; on the durability test video, in some angles, the glass is noticeably caved in to the phone, further proving that it broke due to a hollow spot on the phone.{{Citation |title=Be gentle with Apples new Titanium iPhone 15 Pro Max ... Repairability

A September 2023 report by iFixit found that repairability on the new iPhones was much worse compared to the 14 series due to various software locking issues, forcing people to buy new parts and repair machines specifically by Apple.{{Cite web |last=Roth |first=Emma |date=2023-09-25 |title=iFixit has good news and bad news about the iPhone 15 Pro Max's repairability |url=https://www.theverge.com/2023/9/25/23888952/ifixit-iphone-15-pro-max-teardown-repairability |access-date=2023-10-18 |website=The Verge |language=en |archive-date=2023-10-18 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231018233932/https://www.theverge.com/2023/9/25/23888952/ifixit-iphone-15-pro-max-teardown-repairability |url-status=live }}

Release and critical reception

The devices were unveiled in 2023, alongside the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus during the September 12 Apple Event at Apple Park in Cupertino, California. Pre-orders began on September 15, and the devices were made available to the general public on September 22. The iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max were discontinued on September 9, 2024, following the announcement of the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max.

GSMarena gave the phone 4.5 out of 5 stars.
