The 30th Toronto International Film Festival ran from September 8–17 and screened 335 films from 52 countries - 109 of these films were world premieres, and 78 were North American premieres.{{cite web|url=http://tiff.net/pdfs/TIFF2005AnnualReport.pdf|title=2005 Toronto International Film Festival Annual report|access-date=October 11, 2013}}{{cite web|url=http://www.indiewire.com/article/335_films_on_tap_for_2005_toronto_international_film_festival|title=335 Films On Tap for 2005 Toronto International Film Festival|access-date=October 11, 2013}}{{cite web|url=http://twitchfilm.com/2005/08/complete-list-of-toronto-international-film-festival-films.html|title=Complete List of Toronto International Film Festival Films|access-date=October 11, 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150610215933/http://twitchfilm.com/2005/08/complete-list-of-toronto-international-film-festival-films.html|archive-date=June 10, 2015|url-status=dead}}{{cite web|url=https://www.theguardian.com/film/2005/aug/10/festivals|title=More films line up for Toronto competition|access-date=October 11, 2013}}{{cite web|url=http://kurtscomment.blogspot.com/2005/09/2005-toronto-international-film.html|title=2005 Toronto International Film Festival Wrap-up - 36 Films|access-date=October 11, 2013}}

Awards

At the Festival's closing event, the following prizes were awarded:{{cite press release|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20060710030122/http://e.bell.ca/filmfest/2005/mediaCentre_releaseItem.asp?id=184 |url=http://e.bell.ca/filmfest/2005/mediaCentre_releaseItem.asp?id=184 |date=2005-09-17 |access-date=2015-01-09 |archive-date=2006-07-10 |title=International and Canadian Films Honoured at Closing Awards Event |publisher=Toronto International Film Festival Group |url-status=dead }}

Because the vote for the People's Choice Award was so close, at the awards ceremony Piers Handling (festival co-director) announced four runners-up.{{cite web |newspaper=Toronto Sun |publisher=Jam! As reported by ScreenDaily, the results of the People's Choice Award voting was as follows:{{cite web |title=Tsotsi, Look Both Ways win top prizes at Toronto |author=Mike Goodridge |date=2005-09-18 |access-date=2015-01-09 |url=http://www.screendaily.com/tsotsi-look-both-ways-win-top-prizes-at-toronto/4024406.article |work=ScreenDaily |publisher=Screen International }}

Certain other publications indicated (probably erroneously) that the order of the runners-up was reversed, with Mother of Mine finishing second to Tsotsi.{{cite web |website=Dark Horizons |title=Toronto 2005 Winners Announced |url=http://www.darkhorizons.com/news/2952/toronto-2005-winners-announced |author=Garth Franklin |date=2005-09-19 |access-date=2015-01-09 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150109154358/http://www.darkhorizons.com/news/2952/toronto-2005-winners-announced |archive-date=2015-01-09 |url-status=dead }}{{cite news |newspaper=The New York Times |date=2005-09-19 |access-date=2015-01-09 |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/18/world/americas/18iht-fest.html?_r=1& |title=Toronto Film Festival honors 'Tsotsi' }}{{cite news |newspaper=The Sydney Morning Herald |url=http://www.smh.com.au/news/film/aussie-film-wins-top-toronto-award/2005/09/18/1126981936012.html |title=Aussie film wins top Toronto award |date=2005-09-18 |access-date=2015-01-09 |agency=Reuters }}
