Apple Inc. is an American multinational corporation that designs and manufactures consumer electronics and software products. It was established in Cupertino, California, on April 1, 1976, by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne,{{Cite web|url=http://www.time.com:80/time/80days/760401.html|archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20030417194017/http://www.time.com/time/80days/760401.html |url-status=dead |archive-date=April 17, 2003 |title= TIME: 80 Days That Changed the World, April 1, 1976: Apple Computer Boots Up|date=April 17, 2003|access-date=October 20, 2018 |df= mdy-all }}{{Cite news|url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/apple/11507451/Apple-celebrates-39th-year-on-April-1.html |title= Apple celebrates 39th year on April 1|last=Williams|first=Rhiannon|journal= Daily Telegraph|date=April 1, 2015|access-date=October 20, 2018|language=en-GB |issn= 0307-1235 }} and was incorporated on January 3, 1977.{{Cite web|url=https://investor.apple.com/investor-relations/faq/ |title= Apple – Frequently Asked Questions|website=investor.apple.com|language=en-US|access-date=October 20, 2018}}{{Cite news |url= https://www.cultofmac.com/460775/today-in-apple-history-apple-becomes-a-corporation/|title=Today in Apple history: Apple becomes a corporation {{!}} Cult of Mac|date=January 3, 2018|work=Cult of Mac|access-date=October 20, 2018|language=en-US}} The company's hardware products include the Macintosh line of personal computers, the iPod line of portable media players, the iPad line of tablets, the iPhone line of smartphones, the Apple TV line of digital media players, and the Apple Watch line of smartwatches. The actual number of acquisitions is possibly larger as Apple does not reveal the majority of its acquisitions unless discovered by the press. Apple has cofounded two half-equity partnerships and purchased equity stakes in three preexisting companies, and has made three divestments. Apple has not released the financial details for the majority of its mergers and acquisitions.

Apple's business philosophy is to acquire small companies that can be easily integrated into existing company projects. For instance, Apple acquired Emagic and its professional music software, Logic Pro, in 2002. The acquisition was incorporated in the creation of the digital audio workstation software GarageBand, an integral part of the iLife software suite, and now one of the leading digital audio workstations on iOS and macOS.{{cite web|access-date=June 26, 2008 |url=http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/mar2007/tc20070301_402290.htm |title= What to Do with Apple's Cash |publisher=Bloomberg Businessweek |date=March 1, 2007 |author=Hesseldahl, Arik |url-status=dead |archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20080514121620/http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/mar2007/tc20070301_402290.htm |archive-date= May 14, 2008 }}

The company made its first acquisition on March 2, 1988, with its purchase of Network Innovations. In 2013, Apple acquired thirteen companies. Apple's largest acquisition was that of Beats Electronics in August 2014 for $3 billion.{{cite web|url=https://www.engadget.com/2014/05/28/apple-acquires-beats-electronics-for-3-billion/ |title=Apple acquires Beats Electronics for $3 billion |website=Engadget |date=August 1, 2014 |access-date=August 1, 2014}} Of the companies Apple has acquired, 71 were based in the United States.

In early-May 2019, Apple CEO Tim Cook said to CNBC that Apple acquires a company every two to three weeks on average, having acquired 20 to 25 companies in the past six months alone.{{Cite web|url=https://www.cnbc.com/2019/05/06/apple-buys-a-company-every-few-weeks-says-ceo-tim-cook.html|title=Apple buys a company every few weeks, says CEO Tim Cook|last=Feiner|first=Lauren|date=2019-05-06|website=CNBC|language=en|access-date=2019-05-25}}
