In Australia, the 1992 National Forest Policy Statement (NFPS) made specific provision for the protection of old growth forests. The NFPS initiated a process for undertaking assessments of forests for conservation values, including old growth values. A working group of state and Australian Government agencies took the NFPS definition into consideration in developing a definition that was accepted by all governments (JANIS 1997).{{cite web|url=https://www.environment.gov.au/system/files/pages/d274e552-b0bd-4999-925b-e46a19ffc3d1/files/ld29oldgrowthforests.pdf|title=Science for Decision Makers - Old Growth Forest in Australia: Conservation status and significance for timber production|author1=Rodney J. {{cquote|Old growth forest is ecologically mature forest where the effects of disturbances are now negligible.|author=JANIS 1997}}

In 2008, only a relatively small area (15%) of Australia's forests (mostly tall, wet forests) had been assessed for old-growth values.{{cite web|url=http://www.oldforests.com.au/pages/Presentations/Clancy.pdf|title=Old-growth forest areas and their reservation status across Australia|year=2008|author1=Adam Gerrand|author2=Tim Clancy|author3=Stuart Davey|author4=Geoff Dunn|author5=Ian Frakes|publisher=Bureau of Rural Sciences|access-date=2016-05-21|archive-date=2016-03-02|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160302105527/http://www.oldforests.com.au/pages/Presentations/Clancy.pdf|url-status=live}}

Of the {{Convert|23|e6ha|abbr=off}} of forest in Australia assessed for their old-growth status, {{Convert|5|e6ha|abbr=off}} (22%) is classified as old-growth. Almost half of Australia's identified old-growth forest is in NSW, mostly on public land. More than 73% of Australia's identified old-growth forests are in formal or informal nature conservation reserves.{{cite web|url=http://www.agriculture.gov.au/abares/forestsaustralia/Documents/sofr2013-web2.pdf|title=Australia's State of the Forests Report 2013|year=2013|website=www.agriculture.gov.au|access-date=2016-05-21|archive-date=2017-04-07|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170407043757/http://www.agriculture.gov.au/abares/forestsaustralia/Documents/sofr2013-web2.pdf|url-status=live}}

In 2001, Western Australia became the first state in Australia to cease logging in old-growth forests.{{cite web|url=http://www.fpc.wa.gov.au/protecting-old-growth-forests|title=Protecting Old-Growth Forests|publisher=Forest Products Commission, Government of Western Australia|access-date=2016-05-21|archive-date=2016-08-12|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160812130708/http://www.fpc.wa.gov.au/protecting-old-growth-forests|url-status=live}}
