Hi Wiki-Yorkers,

We are reaching out as part of our community-building efforts at Wikimedia NYC. Our regional group is engaged in a strategic planning process to sharpen our strategy for the next three years, and we would like your input. Given your connection to us and your experience with Wikimedia NYC, I would be grateful if you would be willing to share some of your perspectives and insights as we think about our next chapter.

Attached is an anonymous survey, which will remain active until February 28. Responses will go directly to Barretto Consulting and the Wikimedia NYC board will receive responses in aggregate and to identify cross-cutting themes. Please take some time to answer it and share your thoughts with us.

David Copperfield help

Hi there - I proposed some updates to the David Copperfield article back in February here. Since the Request edits queue seems to be stalled and you’re a member of WP:LAS, I was wondering if you’d be interested in reviewing my proposals? I can’t do it myself because of a COI. Thanks very much. MagicTech1902 (talk) 15:11, 26 August 2022 (UTC)

No, thank you. I’m not a fan. Bearian (talk) 19:28, 26 August 2022 (UTC)

Help with Giffords Law Center article

Hi Bearian. I see you’re a member of WikiProject Law. I’ve made a number of proposals to substantially improve the article about Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, posted on the Talk page here:

Talk:Giffords_Law_Center_to_Prevent_Gun_Violence#Updates_to_Improve_Article_-_June_14,_2022. Since I have a conflict of interest, I can’t implement the changes myself. Would you possibly have time to look at these and weigh in? Thank you very much.Brooklyn1576 (talk) 17:41, 26 August 2022 (UTC)

Long overdue - apologies, but every time I remembered, I wasn't near something on which I could drop you this line I promised to drop when we chatted at Brooklyn Public last year!

The Judas Priest song I mentioned was "Raw Deal", off of the Sin After Sin album. I don't remember the context exactly, but I think this was what I was supposed to mention..! Tduk (talk) 02:14, 16 January 2023 (UTC)

Hi Bearian. I've struck the "tenuous" comment I left on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/United States v. Strong and thank you for what I take as a gentle nudge by your "thanks". Didn't see it at the time of writing but my comment could be interpreted as a cast aspersion on the sincerity of your opinion. Not what I meant, but when I looked at it again, I realised its ambiguity. I respect your opinion, although in this AfD we may have to slightly disagree. Rupples (talk) 19:40, 5 May 2023 (UTC)

:Thanks fine. I was thanking your for constructive criticism. Bearian (talk) 17:03, 6 May 2023 (UTC)

Hello! My draft Draft:James Kall was recently not accepted. I fixed the problem that the Reviewer listed. I’m hoping if you get the time you could give it a look over and see if it could now be accepted as an article. I believe this actor is notable and there are multiple sources discussing him and his works! Thank you! Elvisisalive95 (talk) 17:09, 19 February 2024 (UTC)

Curiosity

You mentioned that you had not found any news regarding the painter Driggu Florentino, yet I believe that your search may not have been conducted properly. I ventured to Google and was able to locate pertinent information. The lack of results likely stemmed from the manner or the location of your inquiry. I recommend attempting again with different sources or more specific search terms.

Could you reevaluate?

AfD controversy about some Jewish history articles

Bearian Thank you for your attention. After you correctly removed the prod at History of the Jews in Cambodia, the same editor who did the prod has subsequently submitted the article for deletion and it seems has plans to pile on a number of similar articles of "History of the Jews in ____" that is part of a greater whole relating to Jewish history, as in :Category:Jewish history by country that have taken over 20 years to be written up on WP. Since you were astute enough to see the potential for controversy with these moves, kindly share your point of view about this at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/History of the Jews in Cambodia. Steven E North

Bearian, would you be willing to give a quick opinion on possible notability of Steven E North? I removed some copyvio material, which did say that he began his career involved in the prosecution of the Weather Underground, but reliable sources don't seem to cover his role. I am considering nominating for AfD. Russ Woodroofe (talk) 17:25, 12 November 2024 (UTC)

:He’s a run of the mill plaintiff’s attorney. The “awards” he’s been given are not competitive. He has no record of law review/ journal, nor service to any bar association. If you take this to WP:AfD, I would be able to help. Bearian (talk) 17:29, 12 November 2024 (UTC)

Easy way to see whether an editor is blocked or inactive

It sounds like you might be interested in a script I use, which shows how long it's been since an editor's most recent edit, if you go to their talk page. See m:User:WhatamIdoing/global.js and look for the line that says "userinfo" (about two thirds of the way down). If you paste that into Special:MyPage/common.js here (if you only want it to work at the English Wikipedia) or m:Special:MyPage/global.js (if you'd like it to work at allof the WMF's SUL-connected wikis), then I think you'll find the results useful. You can see a mockup of the results. WhatamIdoing (talk) 07:14, 10 December 2024 (UTC)

Seeking guidance on problematic user

Hi,

I have come across a user GrandLake editor that seems to be problematic. I see a lot of the articles created by this user seem to be non-notable yet promotional. Quite a few of them seem to have SPA users editing them. It is possible this could be a WP:PAID issue.

I am currently seeking guidance on the next step apart from seeing what articles should be proposed for deletion.- Imcdc Contact 12:03, 16 December 2024 (UTC)

:By using that tag you've alerted them. Let me take a look. Bearian (talk) 13:49, 16 December 2024 (UTC)

::I'm not aware of any checklist, but I will usually:

::# Tag articles heavily edited with the tag;

::# Ask another user or two for help, discretely;

::# Go to an administrators' help page to ask for help; and lastly

::# Ask for Arb Com or check user.

::Bearian (talk) 13:57, 16 December 2024 (UTC)

:::If I personally know someone or use an institution, I use a checkmark on my "contributions" page. Bearian (talk) 15:18, 16 December 2024 (UTC)

::::Imcdc, just to be clear, my personal opinion and those of many others here, is that a conflict of interest is not something that prevents someone from editing an article, as long as the connection is disclosed. For example, two of my science articles were reviewed by Ralph Alpher, who denied their publication. That creates a negative conflict of interest, but I have disclosed it. Likewise, I'm a fan of Patti LuPone and not only edited her article, but took a candid photo of her and added it to her article. This is a positive conflict of interest, because in exchange for her signature, I got to boast about meeting her and obtained something of value. As long as any COI is disclosed, I have no problem. The only issue that's a cardinal sin for me is editing one's own BLP. Bearian (talk) 16:05, 16 December 2024 (UTC)

:::::Imcdc, the official guide is here: Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest. Bearian (talk) 00:52, 17 December 2024 (UTC)

PROD tags on Indian villages

Hey, I've noticed that you've PROD-tagged at least two Indian villages with the rationale "Unreferenced and unimproved almost 15 years. No reliable sources online Google news, newspapers, books, or scholar. Run of the mill, very small village. Not enough information to merge. Can redirect if necessary." I'm sure you've done more, but those two happened to be on navboxes I watch, so I noticed them get unlinked after deletion. The two that I've seen, Inai and Tihawali, both show up on the 2011 Census of India, so they unquestionably meet GEOLAND, and are in fact possible to add sources to (I've restored both and done so). If you're going to keep PROD-tagging Indian villages, can you please check them at the Census first? The original site is dead, but there's an accurate and searchable mirror at census2011.co.in. I have gotten plenty of Indian settlements deleted when they don't meet GEOLAND, so I'm well versed in verifying them. Thank you. ♠PMC(talk) 00:10, 18 December 2024 (UTC)

:Great! Source them! Bearian (talk) 02:19, 18 December 2024 (UTC)

::If you're going to be placing PROD tags, it's your responsibility to conduct a BEFORE check and confirm they fail GEOLAND. At the very least you can trouble yourself to perform a simple search on the census website first, which will enable you to source them yourself if they are located there, and if not, then you have basically a slam-dunk rationale for deletion. ♠PMC(talk) 02:49, 18 December 2024 (UTC)

:::Thank you. Please allow me to explain my process. I always conduct several searches before I propose deletion: especially Google books, newspapers, and news. If I find sources in English or another language that I can read, I add them (with apologies in the edit summary for any poor translation). Recent unreferenced articles on Asian and Oceania topics that I've rescued include Utaki, Thirumangalam, Chennai, Tanghalang Ateneo, Shakotan District, Hokkaido, Saroornagar Indoor Arena, Padungan, and Dilga. I also check and see if there are any articles in other languages that are relatively easy for others to translate such as (in India) Hindi and Tamil. If I find sources or another language article, but I can't translate them, I tag it with the appropriate more sources needed or translation tag, and move on. If I think that I can redirect instead to the district article, I do so. I've also reached out repeatedly on Wikipedia talk:Noticeboard for India-related topics–five times in as many weeks begging for help–to source unreferenced stubs. I haven't yet intentionally searched for primary sources, because they don't contribute to significant coverage, and there is a risk that a few months later another editor may nominate it for deletion or redirecting anyway, wasting my time. I only propose deletion as a last resort, when I can't find two or three secondary sources in any language. Thank you again for teaching me about the census data. As Tony Adams said, "You learn something new every day, no matter how hard you try." Bearian (talk) 03:24, 18 December 2024 (UTC)

::::I noticed that Kunamnenivaripalem was deleted today following your PROD. Your rationale, once again, gives no indication that you checked the census website. As it happens, that one was not on the census anyway, but Vellanaipatti and Seerapalayam, whose PRODs you recently endorsed, both are. Since you made a point during this last conversation of thanking me for teaching you about the census data, please make sure you are checking it. ♠PMC(talk) 19:39, 18 January 2025 (UTC)

:::::Could you please go back through your pending PRODs/PROD endorsements to see if there are any remaining Indian villages which have not been checked against the census? I just had another one that you tagged, Jogal Kasti, come up as deleted on my watchlist. This is very frustrating as it basically puts the onus on me to double check and undelete these articles. ♠PMC(talk) 19:38, 20 January 2025 (UTC)

::::::I tried to do so. Going forward, I will double check. For some reason, my searches are not always catching alternative transcription to English. Bearian (talk) 19:44, 20 January 2025 (UTC)

:::::::I usually double check by the subdistrict (variously called the taluk/tehsil/mandal) or even the district sometimes, if the name doesn't come up on a search. For Jogal Kasti, I had to check Mulbagal taluk and look down the list. ♠PMC(talk) 19:48, 20 January 2025 (UTC)

Seeking guidance on a biographical entry for Allan Gerson

Hi @Bearian -

I noticed that you contributed to Mark Zaid's page, who worked closely with, in full disclosure, my father Allan Gerson (not Alan Gerson), who I have been trying to understand the best practice to contribute to the creation of his Wikipedia page. I am a newbie here, and have created a draft:Allan Gerson, with sources on his work from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and NPR among other sources. Might you be willing to review the page, or point me in the right direction here?

Many thanks for all you do and a belated happy birthday!

Reinstate my profile

Hello Bearian,

I'm very confused as to why my page has been deleted, and specifically regarding the 'unreliable sources' issue.

I believe the issue showed up because I went in last month to update some things, and maybe I did it incorrectly. For sure it was not my intention to go against the rules of Wikipedia.

My Sincere Apology!

Also I am not clear as to exactly what show, project or statement I included that you specifically have issue with. Is it possible for you to let me know?

Please know that everything I had on my profile was 100% legit!

That being said...

Is it possible for my profile to be undeleted/reactivated with the original information that was there when my profile went live in 2013, Less The HIV Information. I'm at a point in my life where I don't want that title/label to be a prominent acknowledgment as to who I am.

Your support would be greatly appreciated!

Thank You in advance!

:Carltonrising, it's 2025, and you must be the last person on Earth who doesn't know that you can't just write or edit your own autobiography, Carlton Wilborn, on Wikipedia. Seriously, it's been policy for decades. Wikipedia is not a social media platform. It's run by a 501(c)(3) charity, called the Wikimedia Foundation, which has very strict guidelines forced upon it by the Internal Revenue Service. In short, it's not just "rules of Wikipedia" but also Tax Law. There are some news articles about you, but they are almost entirely based off of interviews, so we can't use them for evidence of significant coverage. We can't keep out the "HIV information" because that would violate another policy: WP:NPOV. Finally, I no longer have the power to Re-create articles - I resigned as administrator 10 years ago. You can ask Extraordinary Writ for a review. Best of luck and Happy New Year. Bearian (talk) 00:35, 9 January 2025 (UTC)

Upcoming PROD for consulting firms

Hi,

Towards the end of 2024, I was working on a project to clean up small financial institutions and investment firms. I would say most of it done now and there wasn't much pushback since many of these firms really were non-notable and it wasn't a coincidence most creators were SPA.

However it seems I have another PROD project coming up. I came across some consulting firm articles and the problem might be even worse than the previous project. I have seen multiple articles which were just blatant ads for them.

I'm letting you know in advance that there will be quite a few PROD articles coming up on your radar this or next week. I will only nominate a limited amount per day to make the workload more fair since its unreasonable to do everything in just 1-2 days. - Imcdc Contact 05:37, 12 January 2025 (UTC)

:Thanks for the heads up. I feel I'm constantly trying to catch up with Prod and AfD. Bearian (talk) 05:40, 12 January 2025 (UTC)

::Hi.

::Just to let you know. My project to clean up consulting firms is done now. Most of them were PROD without issue.

Wouldn't it be more beneficial...

To actually convert any claimed reliable sources in an article to a reference rather than leaving as an external link? At least for one of them? Rather than just changing the tag template and doing nothing else? Particularly if you're going to have a stance in choosing to make that tag change that one of those ELs is actually a proper source to meet that criteria?

Since I noticed a couple you changed, such as Townsend & Wall, where the ELs are to not a brochure of any kind or any proof of a source and the other source is a dead link. Or Erosion corrosion of copper water tubes, where the first EL goes to a 404 error page and the second is to "The Corrosionist", which appears to be an archived version of someone's personal website from 15 years ago.

Should either of those really have the no sources tag removed? SilverserenC 06:56, 14 January 2025 (UTC)

:WP:BOLD is a suggestion, not a command. Bearian (talk) 11:32, 14 January 2025 (UTC)

Query

Hello, Bearian,

I was wondering if QuiteBearish is an alternate account of yours. It has recently become involved with reviewing PROD'd articles and PRODding ones themselves which is an activity that is only done by a handful of editors, including you. I only know of two very active accounts with Bear in their username so I thought this might be an alternate account of yours but they have no user page. If not, then it is a big coincidence that 2 of the probably 5 or 6 editors who currently spend any time reviewing PROD'd articles are "bears". If, for some reason, they are an impersonator, well, they certainly have no ill intentions! Thanks for all of the work that you do here. Liz Read! Talk! 21:42, 20 January 2025 (UTC)

:No, absolutely not. My only alternative account ever has been User:Bearian'sBooties, which I only use when I'm connected to an unsafe network, and I haven't used it since July 29, 2013 in Albany. There is another "bear" account, Bearcat, but that isn't me, either. "Bear" a common nickname in the LGBTQ and neurodivergent communities. Bearian (talk) 01:06, 21 January 2025 (UTC)

::Yes, I'm quite familiar with Bearcat given his work with categories. So, I knew of the two of you and that Bear was a nickname it was just the overlap reviewing PRODs that I found unusual. Maybe I'll reach out and send him a message. I just wanted to check with you first. Liz Read! Talk! 01:51, 22 January 2025 (UTC)

:::Hi Liz,

:::I hope it's ok for me to jump into this conversation!

:::I have no connection with any of the previously mentioned users. For me, "Bear" is not a nickname but a part of my actual name. I have fleshed out my user page a bit to hopefully make it a bit more clear who I am.

:::I began looking into prods as it seemed an easy way to begin getting involved in the wiki editing process. I plan to continue contributing in other ways, as well, so hopefully I don't create too much work for you! QuiteBearish (talk) 04:48, 24 January 2025 (UTC)

The İpek Ilıcak Kayaalp Page - Deletion

Hi!

Thank you for your contribution on the discussion. I want to explain the situation and hear you point of view, as I believe I had not presented my ideas as I should when the petition went on. The person in question is one of the few female leaders of the country, and I put forward strong sources like Forbes, Capital and WEF. However, you message clearly stated that none of these sources mattered. I want to know why these sources are not reliable, as I do not know better publication and organizations when it comes to business people.

I also would love to know if there are sources that you can indicate as reliable, should I post them on a discussion page so that the deletion can be reconsidered?

Thank you in advance for your guidance and time

Sources

Hi Bearian. Thanks for your comments at the deletion nomination for 2024 Australian Jewish doxxing incident, where you noted many sources, and in particular Newsweek, should be removed from the article. I wanted to ask, now that the nomination has closed and the article has been kept (with its existing sources no less), is there any chance you could take a look at it and remove even a couple of the sources you consider to be unacceptable? The reason I ask instead of doing it myself is that in over 16 years of editing, this is the only actively contentious article I have edited. Now that one main contributor of the article has been topic banned (see this discussion), the only two major contributors are the creator and myself, and I've found being the sole person opposing how the article was original written to be quite stressful. There's no need to look at this, but in case you're interested this is what the article looked like when I first found it: . I also genuinely think the article would benefit from me not being the only person making changes, as I am no expert in any part of this. While I do occasionally completely overall abandoned and neglected articles or even create new ones, day to day about I'm mostly a WikiGnome and am really out of my comfort zone here. I'm not asking you to become a regular editor or even to watch the article (though both would of course be appreciated), rather just to look at it once and decide to remove any sources that are inappropriate. I note you're currently under stress (as am I!) and also taking a Wikibreak, so I'll understand if you can't do this. There's no rush though. Nobody else (understandably) wants to touch the article so the problematic sources will almost certainly still be there once your break is finished. I hope you are having a nice day. Colegio Tomás Guaglén

I noticed that you blanked this article and redirected it to the target article Rancagua. Unfortunately, the target article does not seem to mention the redirect title, so the redirect is likely to be deleted on that basis.

That would be essentially a backdoor deletion of the original Colegio Tomás Guaglén article. It would have been better to send it straight to WP:AFD, or just let the WP:PROD run its course.

I wanted to check with you before starting an WP:RFD. Did I miss something? Why did you create that redirect? Brianjd (talk) 14:29, 16 February 2025 (UTC)

:I'm not right now on a secure WiFi, but here goes: Redirect > Deletion. I rolled back my edits, which places it back in prod. Notifying Bedivere. I am not in any position to do any substantial editing for a month. Bearian (talk) 06:26, 17 February 2025 (UTC)

We are also looking to interview some survey respondents in more detail, and you will be eligible to receive a thank-you gift for the completion of an interview. The outcomes of this research will shape future work designed to improve on-wiki experiences.

We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this survey, which shouldn’t take more than 2-3 minutes. Mass deletions?

Hi Bearian, I saw your name pop up at some of the state and local Arts Council AfDs. The behavior of the editor, ロドリゲス恭子, who is performing mass deletions, often within minutes of one another seems really odd to me. Any thoughts on what might be going on? Netherzone (talk) 13:31, 11 March 2025 (UTC)

:No idea. Libertarian? Censor? Obsessed? I agree that it's unusual – and that it's overwhelmingly the system. A couple of months ago a newbie started to nominate a whole bunch of Iran-Geo-stubs. Same idea. Bearian (talk) 13:46, 11 March 2025 (UTC)

::I left a short note on their talk page, but I'm not holding my breath there will be a response. Netherzone (talk) 14:21, 11 March 2025 (UTC)

:::Got it. Bearian (talk) 14:29, 11 March 2025 (UTC)

::::Heritage Foundation? They're stalking me. Bearian (talk) 05:34, 15 March 2025 (UTC)

:::::Perhaps, but my hunch is that they are disgruntled that some of their efforts were deleted in the past, and this is a reaction to that. I've seen that sort of behavior before. I don't think they understand how notability works on WP, however they are now tagging Arts Councils for "notability" without doing a search for sources to improve these articles.

:::::Anyways, I wish they would clean up after themself. They withdrew their nominations, but did not follow process. None of the formerly AfD'd articles have the proper template on the talk pages, alerting other editors that there was a past AfD. I've asked them to do that, and they simply put a comment on the talk page of Talk:Amador County Arts Council but not the proper template and have ignored the others. I was going to wait a few more days before sending another reminder.

:::::I'm very sorry to hear you are being stalked. I read somewhere recently that there is a HF sock ring. Netherzone (talk) 14:43, 15 March 2025 (UTC)

Thanks

Hi Bearian, thanks for your friendly message on my talk page. I'm not sure what prompted it now as I haven't done much editing in years, but I'll use this occasion to say it's nice to see your user name again. I think we both started editing Wikipedia around the same time, in the 2007ish years, and I remember we edited many of the same legal articles. I hope all is well with you. Warning: Personal Bias

Hello. Wikipedia prides itself on being a neutral platform. Your recent edit summary at Mark Zaid indicates political bias. You called the president’s administration a regime. It’s the current presidential administration. Please adhere to Wikipedia’s neutrality policies on your edits. Continued failure to adhere to Wikipedia policies could result in loss of your editing privileges. 107.126.202.52 (talk) 21:57, 14 March 2025 (UTC)

:Yes, I fully disclosed those biases on my user space and on Talk:Mark Zaid. Go away, Mr. New Yorker / Heritage Foundation. You're the same group that defamed Zaid by accusing him of being partisan. Bearian (talk) 22:40, 14 March 2025 (UTC)

Warning: Personal Attacks

Hello. please refrain personal attacks on talk pages and also refrain from failing to assume good faith. Both of these are against Wikipedia policies. If you have evidence that the person at 107.126.202.52 is affiliated with the New Yorker/heritage foundation and is in that position making edits in violation of Wikipedia policies, please open up an investigation at the administrators notice board. Otherwise, please refrain from personal attacks and assumptions of bad faith. Continued failure to adhere to Wikipedia policies may result in suspension of your editing privileges. Thanks! 205.132.40.30 (talk) 15:06, 15 March 2025 (UTC)

:I know who you are, I know who they are, I know who I am, and I'm not going to be suspended. Bearian (talk) 15:09, 15 March 2025 (UTC)

::You're at Eastern Mennonite University, aren't you? Bearian (talk) 15:11, 15 March 2025 (UTC)

:::Please refrain from personal attacks on Wikipedia. Your postings are in violation of Wikipedia policies. 205.132.40.30 (talk) 15:14, 15 March 2025 (UTC)

:::You might be right that since you once were an administrator that you are in the good ole boys club and will face no accountability for your violations of policies. One thing also: I have no affiliation to the New Yorker or Heritage Foundation. But I recon you’ve already made up your mind on that. 205.132.40.30 (talk) 15:16, 15 March 2025 (UTC)

File:Information icon4.svg There is currently a discussion at noticeboard of discussion regarding personal attacks. The thread is https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard/Incidents#User:Bearian_Personal_Attacks. The discussion is about the topic :Topic. Thank you. 205.132.40.30 (talk) 15:29, 15 March 2025 (UTC)

:I wouldn't be so annoyed - except (1) the Heritage Foundation meat puppets have been harassing me and others for weeks, (2) I've taken multiple and repeated efforts to disclose every single possible remote conflict of interest and point of view in multiple locations from my main user page to WP:AfD and the talk pages of possibly contentious articles, and (3) unlike some people, I'm here to create an encyclopedia, which over 200 articles created, close to 90,000 edits, and hundreds of article rescues. Bearian (talk) 22:32, 15 March 2025 (UTC)

::How do I get in on being a recipient of Heritage Foundation harassment? What articles are involved? I would love to waste their time trying to bother me. I find it super pathetic and hilarious on their part. SilverserenC 22:47, 15 March 2025 (UTC)

:::Lol. Bearian (talk) 03:02, 16 March 2025 (UTC)

::::No, but seriously though, which articles are they complaining about? SilverserenC 03:26, 16 March 2025 (UTC)

:::::Probably Mark Zaid, but I don't know what sets off trolls. I merged/redirected a couple of articles recently. If you look at the talk page, I disclosed that we've been acquainted for over 30 years: we were columnists for the student newspaper. Zaid was in the news recently for Trump yanking his security clearance. To reduce my stress IRL, I avoid editing in contentious areas, and mostly stick to AfD, Prod, and article assessment, but this is an old friend who's been maligned for no good reason. Perception limit & deletion

Respectfully, I didn't find the repetition of your prod2 rationale very helpful, and it doesn't answer my concern. I understood what you wrote originally, and I am keen for the article to be deleted. But I don't think that PROD, which will only soft-delete the article, is sufficient, because it could be restored in the future on request, with all its attendant copyvios (and all the other problems too). Cheers, SunloungerFrog (talk) 14:34, 25 March 2025 (UTC)

:Ok. No problem. Chill. Bearian (talk) 23:17, 25 March 2025 (UTC)

Waterbed theory and other software articles

Bearian -- thanks for getting that article properly referenced then saved.

There's been a Spanish IP tagging 10-20 software articles for proposed deletion some days. It's not malicious -- the articles are inadequately referenced. The problem is that 50 to 70% of the time, I can find at least a page in a book using Google Books or a paper using Google Scholar.

I'm hunting refs and adding them as fast as I can but I can't keep up with this person. I may spend 30 minutes (or more) on an article that IP spent 30 seconds tagging.

I'd like to communicate with the IP but their Orange IP changes multiple times a day so there's no way to leave a message asking them to slow down and suggesting reference sources.

I've been tagging recently PROD'd article talk pages with relevant WikiProjects in hopes one of the projects will pay attention. I've also added {prodded} templates at WikiProject Deletion sorting/Software#Proposed deletions (WP:PROD). You can see the 14 that remain from 3/26 and 3/28 PRODS.

There are 25 of these PRODs for 3/29 so far and the day's not over.

I'm sort of a deletionist but I hate to see salvageable content going out the door.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, --A. B. (talkcontribsglobal count) 18:01, 29 March 2025 (UTC)

:Deprodding? I'm not an expert in coding, although ironically, I've taught some as a substitute teacher. Bearian (talk) 18:08, 29 March 2025 (UTC)

::I'm deprodding the following, adding a tag as needed:

::# Capacity optimization

::# Java Telephony API

::# KiXtart

::# Microsoft Security Development Lifecycle

::# Software Engineering 2004

::# Teleogenesis

::# Tester-driven development

::The rest can be deleted. Proposing that many can clog the system. It's borderline vandalism. Bearian (talk) 18:25, 29 March 2025 (UTC)

:::More deprodding:

:::# Basis database

:::# DataMapper.

:::Bearian (talk) 18:30, 29 March 2025 (UTC)

::::And two more:

::::# Out-of-band agreement

::::# TOra.

Hello Bearian. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of :Draft:Bibrave Boy, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: U5 does not apply to DRAFT space. Thank you. Whpq (talk) 01:12, 30 March 2025 (UTC)

AFD thoughts

I see you chimed in at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Michael Dorf (entrepreneur), which just got closed with delete. Am I misreading it, or did only three people post under it - the original nominator, you, and a recent commenter who seemed to weakly suggest delete+merge content. As far as I can see none of the content was merged (don't know if it was any good as I don't think I ever saw the page), but even so, (and even though I may easily have agreed to delete the page) is such a low volume response to an AfD considered consensus these days? or did I miss something? Tduk (talk) 21:52, 2 April 2025 (UTC)

:I'm not getting involved because I have disclosed a potential conflict of interest, namely that I'm friends-of-friends with the subject. It's very common for only 3 to 6 editors to get involved with low-controversy topics. Again, I did not !vote either way. You are free to appeal the matter, but I've almost never used the system, and have forgotten how to do so. You are also free to merge the articles because anyone who is a confirmed editor can do it. Bearian (talk) 22:11, 2 April 2025 (UTC)

::Oh, no, I'm not particularly concerned with this instance, I'm just wondering if this is how it goes these days. Participation from 2 uninvolved users, one of whom was the nominator, doesn't seem like that strong of a consensus to me. Note that I can't merge them now because I only saw the AfD because the admin unlinked some articles I was watching which linked to this one. I don't think I ever saw the actual article, only the AfD. I'm not too bothered about this case, just worried if it's not the only one. Tduk (talk) 22:14, 2 April 2025 (UTC)

:::It seems to be rare. I avoid certain topics, sports being the biggest, where I don't get involved. Marcus Aurelius wrote something about not needing an opinion on everything. As I said, it's rare to have only two uninvolved editors voting. Bearian (talk) 22:22, 2 April 2025 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Alex Klein

Hello, I would have made this comment on the AFD but it was closed early by a good-faith but new editor (for which I reproached them on their talk page ... but I've checked and can't find anything at WP:OUTCOMES about BLP subjects requesting deletion. Did I miss something, or did you mean to link somewhere else? I'm curious for my own edification about the case you mentioned where Jimbo was involved. Graham87 (talk) 01:57, 6 April 2025 (UTC)

:The link has been over sighted. It was a 2007 AfD. It's one of only two AfDs that I'm aware of that have been memory holed. Bearian (talk) 02:00, 6 April 2025 (UTC)

::I'm not aware of any policy; I'm going with my experience of engaging in thousands of AfD discussions, Graham87. Bearian (talk) 02:02, 6 April 2025 (UTC)

Re Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kelly Bednar

In the very off-chance you care (I would've said this on the AfD if I saw it in time), the deleted edits by the creator were copies of that article on their userpage and sandbox, which were deleted as G13. Cheers, charlotte 👸♥ 09:24, 6 April 2025 (UTC)

Candidates and GNG

I had been meaning to reach out about how I can solve the problem of candidates who do not meet GNG being erroneously found to meet GNG because of run of the mill election coverage in which they are mentioned.
