"Former countries" infobox added to prehistoric Florida ethnic groups and village sites

Since you have edited a number of these articles in the past, whats your opinion on adding the infobox for "former countries" to ethnic, tribal and village organizations in the late prehistoric, protohistoric and early historic Florida and southeastern region? Another editor has begun adding the infobox (which I disagree with) to a number of these articles, sometimes removing and replacing other infoboxes in the process. ( see Tacatacuru [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Tacatacuru&action=history revision history], Uzita (Florida), Pohoy , Tocobaga) The editor, User:Mangokeylime, seems to have a thing for infoboxes. Per our recent interactions (User:Mangokeylime#Mound Builders box and Talk:Mississippian culture#Mound Builders navbox) I'd rather have some neutral parties knowledgeable of the subjects to weigh in with their opinions rather than me jumping in unilaterally on this issue. Thanks, and kind regards, Heiro 03:16, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

:I totally agree that the infox is inappropriate and plainly inaccurate. Trying to formulate a response. I don't understand the unwillingness to acknowledge there is an entire academic system of classifications and definitions that are well established - trying to equate those ancient peoples as "countries" is so off base.Parkwells (talk) 04:00, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

::I've added discussion of why the "nations infobox" (for simplicity's sake) was removed to the Talk pages of articles about the Uzita, Pohoy, and Tocobaga, as well as to Mangokeylime's Talk page, encouraging more learning about the academic conventions and classifications related to the archeological and historical cultures of indigenous peoples. So now I realize I have a question, after having added "ethnic group" infoboxes to many articles about historic Native American tribes. Are these infoboxes also used for the articles on people classified as chiefdoms, such as the three under discussion above? Can't remember. Such groups were documented in the historic period, and articles sometimes note when they disappeared from the historic record.Parkwells (talk) 16:46, 26 January 2018 (UTC)

:::I've always seen them used here for tribal groups. I tend to stick to mostly NA stuff, generally the prehistoric stuff but it sometimes bleeds into the historic with groups like the Taensa which was at least a simple chiefdom (defined as such in one of my sources), and the Natchez who were a paramount chiefdom (pretty sure I saw a source for that recently as well). I've never seen one that fits better than the ethnic box and it's used for both. It would probably be appropriate to add them to any of those articles if they do not already have them, if that's what your asking. As per Mangokeylime, he just seems to really really like adding infoboxes (see the quote he added to his userpage after I started these discussions [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User%3AMangokeylime&type=revision&diff=821711271&oldid=821706837]) to articles. That seems to be the vast majority of his recent edits. And discussions with him about it seem to brickwall pretty fast, see User:Mangokeylime#Mound Builders box, lol. After that I decided to give up discussing (arguing? talking around it endlessly while feeling like you are getting nowhere?) it with him one on one and enlist other neutral opinions and get a consensus. And thanks re the props for Taensa. I hadn't meant to be that extensive but sorta got sucked in. Which sucked me into sorting out the Plaquemine culture out a bit, although that one could still use an extensive rewrite and addition of materials. Unfortunately finding material on it is difficult. It's not as well known as Mississippian and most of the material is scattered throughout individual papers and unpublished thesis', etc. As far as I know there is only one book dedicated to the subject, they say so in the introduction, haha (and the main editor and archaeologist happens to live in the same town as me but I've never ran into him. Would love to sit and discuss it with him some time, but alas). And it wasn't published until a few years ago. Maybe I'll get serious about it one day. Heiro 17:45, 26 January 2018 (UTC)

::::Also, re the "nation state" or "state" argument in general in NA archaeo and history. Cahokia, the largest site north of Mexico, huge population, extensive influence over the eastern part of the continent, etc. And it's still a major issue with some professionals wanting to define it as a "state" and others disagreeing that it had reached that level of political structuring. There is no way the professionals would describe a few tiny villages in coastal Florida as a "state' or "country" as we use the term in English. Heiro 17:50, 26 January 2018 (UTC)

Cherokee citizen categories

Hi - Apologies for putting this on this page, but I am asking for people knowledgeable about Cherokee citizenship and tribal law to weigh in on a discussion of certain Cherokee categories. I'm not asking you to support my proposal, but just for the discussion to have informed contributions. The discussion is at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2018_March_30#Category:Cherokee_people. Also, I'm not very active on Wki these days and don't know many Native American Wikipedians - would appreciate it if you would be willing to suggest others who might join in the discussion. Hello. Just wondering if you've read the JSTOR article about the 1967 Nashville riot yet. There are many articles on Newspapers.com. Please reply here and ping me when you do. Thanks.Zigzig20s (talk) 05:08, 2 June 2018 (UTC)

:Hi, I've started reading that, but am in the middle of my own large project. I am supporting the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, AL, by adding content about lynchings in each of the five counties in each state with the highest # of lynchings, per Lynching in America (2017 supplement, 3rd edition) by the Equal Justice Initiative. I am going to finish that first.Parkwells (talk) 14:45, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

::Nice. By the way, if you are able to retrieve the names of all the lynching victims in Middle Tennessee from them, I could try to create more articles about specific lynchings there.Zigzig20s (talk) 15:20, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

:::The EJI published a Supplement: Lynching by County (this can be found online), which I'm using. It only identifies totals. So I have also conducted Google searches of lynchings by named county, and finding other documentation of names and incidents. In some cases, contemporary newspaper accounts are online, but scholarly sources are better. I have not listed all of the victims by name in these articles, because in the worst states, the list is much too long. There are many other sources which you will find by searching. Especially since the publication of the EJI first report in 2015, some states or other jurisdictions, and major newspapers in those states have published their own reports by name. Here is one that documented lynchings of the 1940s: http://nationalhumanitiescenter.org/pds/maai3/segregation/text2/lynchingcrime.pdf. This includes: June 22, 1940: At Brownsville, Haywood County, Tennessee. Elbert Williams, Negro. Charge, attempting to qualify to vote - “Interest in Negro affairs.” Murdered and body thrown into the Hatchie River."Parkwells (talk) 15:55, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

::::I wish they would add the names on their website. In Middle Tennessee, I have created a few: Lynching of David Jones, Lynching of Amos Miller, Lynching of Ephraim Grizzard, Lynching of Samuel Smith. Someone else created Lynching of Samuel Bierfield a while back. But there must be more--if we know the names, I can retrieve more RS on Newspapers.com to create new articles.Zigzig20s (talk) 16:12, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

:::::You may pick up names by reading the full EJI report, which sometimes goes into details. The TN Encyclopedia online has a lengthy article on lynchings, and there are a variety of other sources. It would be better not to rely only on newspapers. Also, the website for the National Memorial for Peace and Justice may list the names. The memorial is made up of structural elements on which are engraved the names of victims by county, when known- a separate hanging steel piece for each county.Parkwells (talk) 16:20, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

::::::EJI reported a total of five lynchings in Williamson Co, TN, so you could search by county. That's where Samuel SMith was from.Parkwells (talk) 18:00, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

:::::::I've created Lynching of Jo Reed--the suspension bridge was probably the same as the one used for the Lynching of David Jones, but we would need an RS.Zigzig20s (talk) 17:54, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

Mendon, Michigan

The history of high school football in this small town is really remarkable. And it was at least in part, documented. I'm sorry I cannot remember the year, but in the late 80's/early 90's, I was a volunteer firefighter in nearby Vicksburg. On one of the trips to Pontiac for the state championship, literately everyone in town went to the game. We came down and covered the firehouse so the firefighters could go. They won, and we took the pumper out to the county line, the team got on it, and we had an impromptu parade when they came back. This was covered on television by channel 41 out of Battle Creek and written up in the Kalamazoo Gazette, The Battle Creek Enquirer, and I believe the South Bend, Indiana paper. Thanks for writing about this. I really gotta get around to doing an article on the school. However, I am now far far away from the libraries in that area. Jain (talk to me) 15:18, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

:She lived with her sister and brother-in-law for a time and attended some high school there, getting certified to teach. Her family had moved to the free state of Ohio from Virginia in order to escape racial discrimination against free blacks. Gallipolis had a historic African-American community at this time, made up of both free and refugee blacks.Parkwells (talk) 17:20, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

Hi there, when you get a moment would you take a look at Fort Edward (Nova Scotia)? Your recent edit added "ref within a ref" type of error, which I'm not sure how to fix. [[Wikipedia:Proposed deletion|Proposed deletion]] of [[:List of people of self-identified Cherokee ancestry]]

File:Ambox warning yellow.svg

The article :List of people of self-identified Cherokee ancestry has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

List which can never be complete, does not discuss a defining feature, self-identification is often disputed and can rarely, if ever, be satisfactorily proven or disproven - this renders us having to deal with nuanced, inconclusive literary arguments in a listicle format.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{Tlc|proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{Tlc|proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Sumner County, Tennessee

Hello! I apologize for the long message—this is my first time talking to another editor, and I want to make sure that I communicate my suggested edit well.

I recently read the Sumner County, Tennessee article, and I noticed it said that Sumner County is the second oldest county in the state. I have looked at the editing history for this article, and it appears that you added this information on December 27, 2018. Based on my research, it appears that Sumner County is the fifth or sixth oldest county in the state after the following: Washington Co. (1777); Sullivan Co. (1779); Greene Co. (1783); Davidson Co. (1783); and possibly Hawkins (1787).

Since there is some murkiness concerning whether it is the fifth or sixth oldest, I would like to delete this part of the sentence.

The act forming Hawkins County is located in the 1786 Acts of North Carolina, Chapter 34 and reports the law passed on January 6, 1787. The act forming Sumner County is located in the 1786 Acts of North Carolina, Chapter 32 and reports law also passed on January 6, 1787. http://digital.ncdcr.gov/cdm/ref/collection/p16062coll9/id/264487

According to the 1786-7 North Carolina Senate Journal, the Senate passed the bill dividing Sullivan Co. (creating Hawkins Co.) on its third and final reading on December 30, 1787 (p. 183). I could not find the Senate date of passage on the third and final reading for the bill dividing Davidson Co. (creating Sumner Co.), possibly because the last pages of the journal are missing: https://docsouth.unc.edu/csr/index.php/document/csr18-0001

According to the 1786-7 North Carolina House of Commons Journal, the House passed the bill dividing Sullivan Co. (creating Hawkins Co.) on its third and final reading on December 28, 1786 (p. 392). The House passed the bill dividing Davidson Co. (creating Sumner Co.) on its third and final reading on January 3, 1787 (p. 440): https://docsouth.unc.edu/csr/index.php/document/csr18-0002

Aeriallibrarian (talk) 19:43, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

:Hi, thanks for all your work. I agree with deleting that assertion about "second oldest". I had simply taken the assertion from the article on Gallatin, the county seat. Now I see that the cite in the Gallatin, Tennessee article was weak (this was not something I had researched). How about adding your cites for the date? Thanks and best of luck in your Wikipedia work, and keep those eagle eyes!Parkwells (talk) 22:26, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

Coleman Manufacturing

I appreciate your improvements to this article and the one about the building. With all the duplication, it seems like there should just be one article. What do you think?— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 17:01, 25 January 2019 (UTC)

:Okay, I see you've stated your opinion. I'm not sure the expansion of both articles is justified if they should be separate topics, but if consensus says that's all right, I won't object.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 17:04, 25 January 2019 (UTC)

::I see you added to the man's biography too. I got the expansion started, but I admit much more needed to be said. By the way, given the amount of information, I'm convinced Warren Clay Coleman may be more notable than Warren Coleman. If so, the singer should not be the primary topic. Unless his article can also be expanded. Hey--I just saw you did extensive work on her, in the related article. Please help me fill this out--I'm sure it'll be a great hit on DYK. Drmies (talk) 20:57, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

: That's great that you started it. For a while I had access to the scholarly article by Hannah Durkin, but they must have closed it off. Will try to help more. It is a remarkable account - and the fact there is a video of her, too. Brief, but she is there.Parkwells (talk) 14:31, 10 April 2019 (UTC)

::I got access to it easily this morning, but I'm on campus--maybe that makes a difference. I just saved the PDF and will be happy to send it to you, if you email me through the system. You just added that she was interviewed in the Montgomery Advertiser? That's amazing; I don't see in Durkin's article that she has it, but I'll ask the paper and the state archive here. Oh, about the name--you saw maybe that I tweaked your wording back to what I had--I don't want to be too stubborn here but a slave name is still a slave name and she didn't choose it. Durkin has a long footnote on the name which I will try to bring in, and she also says she kept the name Redoshi (though its authenticity is in question) "...also because 'Sally Smith' reflected slavery's dehumanising naming practices". And that's also why I put the article under that name, as I'm sure you understand.

Hey, thank you SO MUCH for working on this with me. I really appreciate it. Drmies (talk) 17:14, 10 April 2019 (UTC)

You've added a bunch of content at Zora Neale Hurston‎ but no few citations. Would you please go back and show us the reference material supporting your assertions? We can discuss on the article's talk page. Normally, I would simply revert everything you've done and issue warnings but I'm AGF'ing here. Chris Troutman (talk) 16:18, 11 April 2019 (UTC)

:Thanks for giving me more time. I'm adding more cites now - basically I relied on the sources that were already cited and just read more deeply in them, trying to provide more context for the material.Parkwells (talk) 15:05, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

::Which is fine. I prefer seeing inline citations at the end of paragraphs, if not sentences. An edit summary mentioning that the new material falls under a particular source would help, too. This is a collaborative project, after all. Chris Troutman (talk) 15:49, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

:::I agree with placing cites at the end of sentences and paragraphs, and edit existing material to conform to that. Will work at being more clear on edit summaries. Parkwells (talk) 15:58, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

::::Many thanks! I appreciate the effort you're making to improve articles; I don't want to confuse your efforts with the vandals I constantly revert. I never know if an account has been compromised. Chris Troutman (talk) 16:17, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

:I know modern-day Neo-Confederates believe foreign nationals are slaves who have no right to free speech, but I want to figure out if this harks back to postbellum black codes, or antebellum mores. Maybe you can help? Otherwise I will e-mail a few historians.Zigzig20s (talk) 16:27, 28 June 2019 (UTC)

::Hi, sorry, but I don't have much time for this right now. In the colonial era, slaves were considered foreigners, not English subjects, because they had not been born to English parents. England had no process for naturalization at the time. One historian suggested that issues about their status were related in part to "subjecthood" rather than race. Will see what I can do in a few days. Do you have cites for the opinion of current Neo-Confederates (it would need specific attribution to particular people, right)?Parkwells (talk) 16:50, 28 June 2019 (UTC)

:::Anecdotally, if you listen to Neo-Confederates, they always say that they believe "foreigners have no rights". I would need to look for specific literature to cite it of course... I am also trying to figure out if the current support for censorship of political speech comes from Neo-Confederate scholars (who may be using political correctness and fake liberal values to hide their true colors).Zigzig20s (talk) 17:02, 28 June 2019 (UTC)

AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October!

{{Ivmbox|File:AfroCine - bare logo.png

Greetings!

After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.

The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which have been dedicated to creating and improving content that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. Join us in this global edit-a-thon, by helping to create or expand articles which are connected to this scope. Also remember to list your name under the participants section.

On English Wikipedia, we would be recognizing participants in the following manner:

  • Overall winner (1st, 2nd, 3rd places)
  • Diversity winner
  • Gender-gap fillers

For further information about the contest, the recognition categories and how to participate, please visit the contest page here. For further inquiries, please leave comments on the contest talkpage or on the main project talkpage. See you around :).--Jamie Tubers (talk) 00:50, 30 September 2019 (UTC)}}

----

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here

One Person, One Vote Edits

Hi, Parkwells — what do you mean by “reapportionment by Congress” that is not also implied by the phrase that follows, “or a change in the number of seats to which that state was entitled in the House of Representatives”? [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=One_man,_one_vote&diff=next&oldid=974563700] The way you wrote it, it sounds like they are two unrelated things. Do you mean to say something like “Some never redrew them, except when it was mandated by reapportionment of Congress and a resulting change in the number of seats to which that state was entitled in the House of Representatives.” ? — Andy Anderson 22:51, 23 August 2020 (UTC

:Hi, thanks, Andy - yes, your wording is better. I was going too fast. I was struck by the lengthy "change in the number of seats....blah, blah" and thought, why not just use the correct term, "reapportionment", so people understand what it means? Will adopt your suggestion.Parkwells (talk) 14:41, 24 August 2020 (UTC)

Oktibbeha County and Robinson Road

In [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Oktibbeha_County,_Mississippi&diff=975652148&oldid=974180825 this] edit, you modified Robinson Road with present-day. The present-day Robinson Road is a tiny remnant of the old Robinson Road that existed back in the early 1800s. I think the article was referring to the old road, which was a major thoroughfare from Columbus to what is now Jackson. There's a little bit of information in Jackson's Military Road, (which Robinson Road replaced) and it might be possible to find something in the sources in that article.Jacona (talk) 21:42, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

:Actually, since the source is from 1901, it has to be the old Robinson Road. [https://web.archive.org/web/20140424211211/http://www.forgottenbooks.org/readbook_text/Publications_of_the_Mississippi_Historical_Society_v4_1000473765/275 here] is a link to an archived copy.Jacona (talk) 21:45, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

The Months of African Cinema Contest Continues in November!

{{Ivmbox|File:AfroCine - bare logo.png

Greetings,

Thank you very much for participating in the Months of African Cinema global contest/edit-a-thon, and thank you for your contributions so far.

It is already the middle of the contest and a lot have been achieved already! We have been able to get over 1,500 articles created in over fifteen (15) languages! This would not have been possible without your support and we want to thank you. If you have not yet listed your name as a participant in the contest page please do so.

Please make sure to list the articles you have created or improved in the article achievements' section of the contest page, so that they can be easily tracked. To be able to claim prizes, please also ensure to list your articles on the users by articles page. We would be awarding prizes to different categories of winners:

  • Overall winner
  • 1st - $500
  • 2nd - $200
  • 3rd - $100
  • Diversity winner - $100
  • Gender-gap filler - $100
  • Language Winners - up to $100*

We are very excited about what has been achieved so far, but your contributions are still needed to further exceed all expectations! Let’s create more articles before the end of this contest, which is this November!!!

Thank you once again for being part of this global event! --Jamie Tubers (talk) 10:30, 06 November 2020 (UTC)}}

Nonsourced statements

You are making non-sourced and clearly biased POV statements on these articles. I will not hesitate to remove your non-sourced statements and revert them back to the original consensus wording if it continues. --Tsistunagiska (talk) 13:51, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

Archiving talk page

Hello, Parkwells,

You should consider archiving large sections of your talk page. It is quite a chore to scroll through the bottom and I'm not sure how messages from years ago are still useful to you. Liz Read! Talk! 00:19, 11 November 2020 (UTC)

Parkwells (talk) 00:26, 11 November 2020 (UTC):You're absolutely right, am far behind on that.Parkwells (talk) 03:44, 11 November 2020 (UTC)

:No big deal! I came hear after reading Doug's talk page to look at the disputes you are in the midst of and just thought I'd leave a note about your talk page. I hope you can find a way to work with the editor you've had edit wars with yesterday. It usually helps to involve other editors so it isn't a "me vs. you" situation. Liz Read! Talk! 00:31, 11 November 2020 (UTC)

::Thanks, that's why I started consulting with Doug Weller, with whom I've worked successfully in the past. This is exhausting. I definitely made errors, and am embarrassed about it, in eagerness to get away from the election. It felt so refreshing to try to concentrate on these history articles, so was working too fast, and have apologized to the editor more than once for my errors. But since the first day she has attributed most actions of mine to bias and poor intentions, reverted all 17 changes I made in 3 or 4 articles, most on one day, labeling them as "non-sourced non-neutral POV", when most were non-substantive, word choice changes.Parkwells (talk) 20:49, 11 November 2020 (UTC)

:::I had little participation on this Cherokee history article in the past years, and it has problems with sources, organization and content. But I have not been working on this era recently, and have decided to retire from this article. A major challenge ahead for the editors will be trying to integrate it with the major Cherokee people/Nation articles, which already contain much history, some probably in conflict with current thinking. But I have other obligations.Parkwells (talk) 20:49, 11 November 2020 (UTC)

Current editing

I moved this here too because I wanted to respond differently and didn't feel it was necessary to have on an article talk page. I will respond there too but not in such detail:

:I worked today in editing to reorganize the Cherokee history article more chronologically (mostly based on content and sources already in the article, which were mostly not mine, as you can see from the History. Given the length of the discussions on this Talk page, it has been impossible so far to check all the sources in the article.) I incorporated and cited some of Steere's material from his 2015 article on the Mounds and Towns project to try to establish a better overall framework. I also corrected material in the Cherokee history article, distinguishing between the Mississippian culture period in their homeland, where the prehistoric peoples were their ancestors, and AL and GA. In the latter region, the Mississippian culture peoples were generally considered ancestral to the historic Muscogee. The reason that I included that was because there had been confusion. It was easier to try to begin to incorporate Steere's material on Cherokee history, in order to be able to show you, than to write it all on this Talk page. Would you be interested in looking at it and telling me what you think in terms of general approach? We appear to be the only two people currently working on this article.Parkwells (talk) 20:31, 11 November 2020 (UTC)

::This has been frustrating for both of us. I'm sorry we've had so much difficulty but am turning it over to you. You and others can rewrite it as you wish, and find new sources to replace out-of-date ones. You can see from the History that many people were involved on this article for years before me. My contribution was very small, but you have decided I'm responsible for all its wrongs. I can't fix everything at once, and we are at cross purposes.Parkwells (talk) 20:31, 11 November 2020 (UTC)

:::That has been the problem from the beginning. No one, including myself, was asking you (singular) to fix anything. Wikipedia is a collaboration in which editors gain a community consensus on material within the encyclopedia. There is no community consensus on anything you have added over the last week or even back in May. There is no consensus on anything I claimed on the article talk page. This is because it hasn't been discussed. I have went through every edit of this article all the way back to May. Most were copy/edits and small changes. The last major changes before what you have done this last week were done in May by you when it was added that the "Cherokee were not mound builders" and a large part of the article shifted to how the Cherokee are not the Muscogee and this is why. But no one from the Cherokee perspective has ever asserted they were the same or claimed Muscogee history as Cherokee history. There was no confusion on the part of the article. The confusion came when Muscogee history was incorporated into an article whose content was strictly to be about Cherokee history and how it was influenced and had influence on those they came in contact with. Simply putting into the article, if that is the consensus, that "it is believed they are related to the earlier and larger Mississippian Culture but that the details of that relationship and how they are linked is relatively unknown" would suffice to me. Neither the Muscogee/Creek nor the Cherokee were in the mound building business by the time of Anglo-European contact. We don't really know if they were still building mounds when the Spanish made contact. We do know they both were adding to the ones already present at that time. All I wanted was discussion before edits were made. Not the mess it became. These articles are a safe place for me because it's the only niche I have here on Wikipedia anymore. I've given up editing on other topics because there is a serious issue with the policies here. These are my ancestors and I love learning about them and I love honoring them with what is written here because I do believe they would want the truth, even when it contradicts what they believed, to be included. I am sorry for the long wall of words but I don't know how to get my point across. It's not about you or me, it's about what is presented and how that consensus was reached. --Tsistunagiska (talk) 21:30, 11 November 2020 (UTC)

Oneupsmanship: This painting turned the friendly rivalry between Edward Redfield and Elmer Schofield into
a feud. Schofield was a frequent houseguest at Redfield's farm, upstream from New Hope, Pennsylvania,
and the two would go out painting together, competing to capture the better view. Redfield served on the jury
for the 1904 Annual Exhibition of the Carnegie Institute; at which, despite Redfield's opposition, Across the
River
was awarded the Gold Medal and $1,500 prize. It was not until a 1963 interview that the 93-year-old
Redfield revealed the painting as the cause of the 40-year feud between them. Schofield may have painted it
in England, but a blindsided Redfield knew that it was a view of the Delaware River, from his own front yard!

Morgan Territory

I should probably have discussed this before I attempted a merge. But do you think it is useful to have separate articles for Morgan Territory relating to the area and Morgan Territory Regional Preserve? Before you edited Morgan Territory it was clearly about a broader topic compared to Morgan Territory Regional Preserve. —Lights and freedom (talk ~ contribs) 02:17, 3 November 2021 (UTC)

Moral lesson: John Vanderlyn was an American painter who studied in Paris, and his life-sized
Ariadne Asleep on the Island of Naxos was one of the first large nudes exhibited in the United States.
Peddling the poison as well as the cure, this overtly sensuous work was presented to the public as a
moral lesson on the consequences of lascivious behavior. Visible in the distance is the ship of
Princess Ariadne's secret lover, Theseus, for whom she has betrayed her people by helping him to
escape the Labyrinth and slay the Minotaur. Ariadne's bliss will come to an end when she awakens
from her post-coital reverie, only to discover that the faithless Theseus has sailed away without her.

[[Internet Archive Scholar]] vs. JSTOR

Hello, I see on your user page that you use JSTOR and I'd like to know more about your experience. By my calculations, a good 70 % of the main JSTOR content is now available for everyone at Internet Archive Scholar, with full text search provided e.g. at https://scholar.archive.org/ . The service is still in beta, but I've used it for some source-finding and it seems quite usable to me; I wonder whether that's just my experience. If you have a chance, the next time you'd be looking for a source on Google Scholar or JSTOR or similar, to perform the same search on IA scholar instead, I'd be curious to hear how it ends up. Thanks, Nemo 19:06, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

:Hi, Nemo, I will try to remember to use Internet Archive Scholar. Have not been working as much recently on topics where I used JSTOR, but have found it really valuable in the past. That's excellent that it is now available through IAS in addition to the Wikipedia arrangement.Parkwells (talk) 16:15, 28 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi there! I'm new to Wikipedia and have just written my first article, Alabama literature. Seventh cholera pandemic

Hi! I've just noticed that 10 years ago, you moved Seventh cholera pandemic to Seventh cholera pandemic (1961-1975) (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Seventh_cholera_pandemic&oldid=482422042), but it is disputed if the pandemic really ended in 1975 (e.g. the WHO considers the pandemic is still ongoing), so I guess that the title is a bit problematic re:NPOV.

Could you consider reversing the redirect? I made an "official" request to move the page, but I was thinking that maybe you'd like to know, in particular if you have information that I may be not aware of. Thanks. 37.166.98.34 (talk) 15:49, 25 July 2022 (UTC)

:Hi, I just happened to be looking at that myself (after reviewing material about the 4th pandemic, in which several relatives died in 1873). I agree that the end date has been superseded by repeated outbreaks. I had originally put in the dates (as defined in the article) to try to identify it, since just the number is not a quick way for readers to place it in time. Given that WHO believes the pandemic continues, how about if we move Seventh cholera pandemic (1961-1975) to Seventh cholera pandemic (1961-present)?Parkwells (talk) 15:36, 26 July 2022 (UTC)

:Hi, Bookku - Thanks for your interest in this. I have made a number of editing changes on your sandbox draft and am thinking of more. Sorry to leave it undone, but ran out of time. I think your summary table gives a lot of information for this unusual piece and am trying to decide how best to add more plot information. Thanks again for your work. Thank you for your amazing work!

Hello Parkwells, I was just reading the Hunkpapa Lakota wiki page (originally led there by one of my new favorite actors, Zahn McClernon, who is from this tribe). Some of the content in that page was *so* well-written, I had to comb through its edit history to determine its provenance. It appears as though you seeded the initial text and sources in 2009 that started to meaningfully shape this excellent page.

I was doubly impressed to discover that you have been steadily contributing such well-sourced and beautifully composed content on en.wiki through the present day, alongside your ample contributions to improve existing content. I am a long-time lover of the English language at every level, and you have basically become my wiki-hero 😂🙌.

I've been a freelance editor on and off for 20 years, and I started "dipping my toes" into editing here over the past year. However, the many layers of rules, norms and processes left me a bit intimidated to go beyond superficial copyediting for style and clarity. Just glancing at the breadth and depth of your contributions, though, has me inspired to keep taking steps forward and learning the citation formatting norms that have given me pause, as well as getting more comfortable with the RSN expectations for varied topical areas here on en.wiki.

Just want to say, thanks for all you've done! I see your contributions as more than just useful in a utilitarian sense. Your edits and writing style are downright beautiful, demonstrating the elegance of the language and elevating the articles you work on to a magnificent degree. Cheers and best wishes! Chiselinccc (talk) 08:42, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

:Hi, thank you so much for your generous comments! I've learned so much by working on Wikipedia, and gotten to follow so many avenues of curiosity. With practice you'll get comfortable and I hope you enjoy working here as much as I have! Parkwells (talk) 19:32, 17 December 2023 (UTC)
