Invite to the African Destubathon
Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. It could be one of the content targets for your AfroCrowd group. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most geography, wildlife and women articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! So it would be a good chance to win something for improving stubs on African women and any topic under the sun! Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing a few expanded articles during your editathon or as independent editors, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. Diversity of work from a lot of people will make this that bit more special. If you could help publicize this too and get more people involved I'd be grateful, thanks.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:55, 5 October 2016 (UTC)

Ways to improve Rebecca Lolosoli
Hi, I'm Xyzspaniel. Shanluan, thanks for creating Rebecca Lolosoli!
I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. The only ref on the page does not work, as this is a BLP it must have at least one reliable source backing up at least one statement in the article
The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse. XyzSpaniel Talk Page 23:18, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Rebecca Lolosoli
Hello Shanluan,
I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Rebecca Lolosoli for deletion, because the article doesn't clearly say why the subject is important enough to be included in an encyclopedia.
If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title={{urlencode:Talk:Rebecca Lolosoli}}&action=edit§ion=new&preload=Template:Hangon_preload&preloadtitle=This+page+should+not+be+speedy+deleted+because...+ contest this deletion], but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

Eventbrite sign-up or alternative.
Good morning. I need to compile a list of the real names of all non-FIT folks coming to the Intl Women's Day Editathon on Wednesday, March 8. Eventbrite has this really nice feature that creates a sign-in sheet that would be perfect for handing over to the security desk. Would you do me the favor of signing up via Eventbrite? http://fashionedtwiki.fitnyc.edu. If for some reason you don't want to do that, please just provide me with your first and last name. Thanks. --Librarianhelen (talk) 14:49, 7 March 2017 (UTC)

{{Quote box|quote=
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
|width=20%|align=right}}A tag has been placed on :Jennifer Brice requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a real person or group of people, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Deletion discussion about [[Jennifer Brice]]
Hello, Shanluan,
I wanted to let you know that there's a discussion about whether Jennifer Brice should be deleted. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jennifer Brice .
If you're new to the process, articles for deletion is a group discussion (not a vote!) that usually lasts seven days. If you need it, there is a guide on how to contribute. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.
Thanks,
Nick Moyes (talk) 20:38, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
PS: Since nominating I have tried my very best to add a number of better references and a few relevant biographical details. Maybe you can dig out a few more to help better show her notability? Unfortunately, on balance, I think the AfD discussion should still stand. Nick.
:PPS: I'm really sorry this page has been deleted - I did try to establish notability for her, but I'm afraid I failed, and I'm sorry you weren't around to lend a hand with that. Nick Moyes (talk) 23:36, 22 October 2017 (UTC)
Wikipedia Asian Month 2017: Invitation to Participate
Hello! Last year, you signed up to participate in Wikipedia Asian Month (WAM) 2016 on the English Wikipedia. The event was an international success, with hundreds of editors creating thousands of articles on Asian topics across dozens of different language versions of Wikipedia.
I'd like to invite you to join us for Wikipedia Asian Month 2017, which once again lasts through the month of November. The goal is for users to create new articles on Asian-related content, each at least 3,000 bytes and 300 words in length. Editors who create at least four articles will receive a Wikipedia Asian Month postcard!
Also be sure to check out the Wikipedia Asian Art Month affiliate event - creating articles on Asian art topics can get you a Metropolitan Museum of Art postcard!
If you're interested, please sign up here for the English Wikipedia. If you are interested in also working on other language editions of Wikipedia, please visit the meta page to see other participating projects. If you have any questions, please visit our talk page.
Thank you!
- User:SuperHamster and User:Titodutta on behalf of The English Wikipedia WAM Team
This will be the last message you receive from the English Wikipedia WAM team for being a 2016 participant. If you sign up for WAM 2017, you will continue receiving periodic updates on the 2017 event.

Uris Center for Education (81st Street entrance) at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City. Following the first Met edit-a-thon in May 2017, the museum is excited to work with Wikipedia Asian Month for the potential to seed new articles about Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any part of Asia. These can be illustrated with thousands of its recently-released images of public domain artworks available for Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse Asian collections onsite and remotely.

Event coordinator
Hi, the English Wikipedia recently created a new user permission for editors involved in off-wiki outreach work, event coordinator. This new permission allows users to mark accounts for confirmed for up to 10 days, and also allows them to create accounts for events without rate limits without some of the features of the account creator right that aren't used at edit-a-thons and other events. I have added the event coordinator permission to your account and removed the account creator permission, as you appear to have been using it mainly for outreach work.{{pb}}This should have no noticeable impact on your ability to create accounts, and will give you the extra ability to temporarily confirm accounts if you need to. For more in formation, you can see the information page on the right, or you can ask me if you have any questions. TonyBallioni (talk) 13:16, 15 May 2018 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for September 20
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Kara Springer, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Bajan ([//dispenser.info.tm/~dispenser/cgi-bin/dablinks.py/Kara_Springer check to confirm] | [//dispenser.info.tm/~dispenser/cgi-bin/dab_solver.py/Kara_Springer?client=notify fix with Dab solver]). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ{{*}} Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

'''AfroCine:''' The Months of African Cinema Continues….
Greetings!
Thank you very much for signing up to participate in the Months of African Cinema global contest/edit-a-thon, and thank you for your contributions so far.
It is already the middle of the contest and a lot have been achieved already! We have been able to get over 200 articles created in over seven (7) languages! The figures soars to up to a thousand, if Wikidata entries are included. Furthermore, there have been about 5 in-person gatherings of Wikipedians in different countries across the world to create articles about African(a) cinema!
We are very excited about what has been achieved so far, but your contributions are still needed to further exceed all expectations! Let’s create more articles before the end of this contest, which is this November!!!
- Article suggestions can be found here. You can also add to this list.
- Some notable reliable sources for African cinema can be found here. Again, this list needs expansion.
- Interested in Wikidata translation? check out the Occupation Drive, which is being led by Wiki Loves Women, in support of the contest and the project!
- Please remember to list articles you have created or improved in the Article Achievements section of the contest page, so that they can be easily tracked.
Thank you once again for being part of this global event!
Kind regards.--Jamie Tubers (talk) 22:50, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

Translat-a-thon NYC 2019 @ LaGuardia Community College is hosting the second annual Wikipedia Translatathon! At this event on Thursday evening and during the day Friday this week, anyone from the public is invited to LaGuardia to join students, professors, and CUNY faculty in translating Wikipedia articles among any languages which attendees understand. Themes for this event include public health and the history of New York City. New York City has a large immigrant population and great diversity of speakers of various languages. Among all schools in New York City, LaGuardia has the highest percentage of immigrant students, the highest percentage of students who speak a language other than English as their first language, and the greatest representation of language diversity. It is a strength of LaGuardia that it can present "Wikipedia translatathons", which are Wikipedia translation events. |

AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October!
{{Ivmbox|File:AfroCine - bare logo.png
Greetings!
After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.
The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which have been dedicated to creating and improving content that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. Join us in this global edit-a-thon, by helping to create or expand articles which are connected to this scope. Also remember to list your name under the participants section.
On English Wikipedia, we would be recognizing participants in the following manner:
- Overall winner (1st, 2nd, 3rd places)
- Diversity winner
- Gender-gap fillers
For further information about the contest, the recognition categories and how to participate, please visit the contest page here. For further inquiries, please leave comments on the contest talkpage or on the main project talkpage. See you around :).--Jamie Tubers (talk) 00:50, 30 September 2019 (UTC)}}

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Uris Center for Education (81st Street entrance) at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City. The museum is excited to work with Wikipedia Asian Month for the potential to seed new articles about Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any part of Asia. Asia Art Archive will host a sister event in Hong Kong next week.

Recent account creations
Hi {{u|Shanluan}}, I've noticed that you've created a couple of accounts today, and that for one of them you entered an email address in the "reason" field, which is publicly logged. As such, I've had to suppress that log entry. I must ask you to take much more care when creating accounts.{{pb}}On that note, I notice that both of those account creations today were performed by specifying a password. This means you technically have knowledge of that password and thus the accounts you've created could be classed as compromised and blocked. I assume that this is for the AfroCrowd outreach event, and as such you should be checking the "Use a temporary random password and send it to the specified email address" box when you create the account, which emails a temporary password to the user for their first login. {{pb}}Cheers! stwalkerster (talk) 20:32, 22 February 2020 (UTC)
:Nice to know someone is checking up, {{u|Stwalkerster}}. I was working that event in Harlem with my friend. I was similarly making new accounts as part of introducing new editors to our various processes. My experience is, Special:CreateAccount is most easily used by letting the newbie do all the typing; we're usually busy double-tasking, advising someone else about signature or citation or something, and turning back for a quick look at what the new one has typed, before telling them to hit the big blue button.
:And the temporary password system is clumsy. I mean, yesterday I was with three who couldn't remember the password they created an hour ago, and one who simply couldn't type the same password twice on the same page. So, no, making a temporary password and immediately changing it would get us hopelessly bogged down. Perhaps some quicker, neater method could be devised. Of course, it would all be easier if more newbies would follow the advice on our flyers and already have their account in hand when they arrive at the library with their laptop. But, that doesn't always happen. Some don't even see the part about bringing their laptop. It gets hectic. Jim.henderson (talk) 13:38, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
::{{re|Jim.henderson}} I'll note that it's the established policy and guidelines by the community that dictates the usage of the temporary password email functionality, and to never allow event participants access to your account. It's even noted that allowing others access to your account is one of the grounds for removal of the right, and I'm aware that stewards have gone as far as locking accounts for when they've been accessed by other users. {{pb}}This is not just for the end user's protection, it's for yours as well. If you don't set that email flag, it looks like this is an account of yours, not one for the end user. It also looks like you have access to that user's account, or vice versa. It's also quite likely that a fair number of users at these events use the same password for multiple sites, and it's quite possible that one or more of these get saved in your browser password store. If a user can't remember a password that they've set, or can't enter it twice correctly, then this to me sounds very much like a case of competence is required, and I grow concerned about what else they'll forget, such as WP:V or WP:RS. {{pb}}At the end of the day, you are responsible for everything that happens with your account, so you will have to answer for anything that a newbie does accidentally or maliciously. stwalkerster (talk) 18:49, 25 February 2020 (UTC)

[[Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion|Speedy deletion]] nomination of [[:File:Afro Free Culture Crowdsourcing Wikimedia (AfroCROWD).svg]]
A tag has been placed on :File:Afro Free Culture Crowdsourcing Wikimedia (AfroCROWD).svg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This edition of the Editing newsletter includes information the Wikipedia:Talk pages project, an effort to help contributors communicate on wiki more easily. The central project page is on MediaWiki.org.
- Reply tool: This is available as a Beta Feature at the four partner wikis (Arabic, Dutch, French, and Hungarian Wikipedias). The Beta Feature will get new features soon. The new features include writing comments in a new visual editing mode and pinging other users by typing
@
. You can test the new features on the Beta Cluster. Some other wikis will have a chance to try the Beta Feature in the coming months. - New requirements for user signatures: Soon, users will not be able to save invalid custom signatures in Special:Preferences. This will reduce signature spoofing, prevent page corruption, and make new talk page tools more reliable. Most editors will not be affected.
- New discussion tool: The Editing team is beginning work on a simpler process for starting new discussions. You can see the initial design on the project page.
- Research on the use of talk pages: The Editing team worked with the Wikimedia research team to study how talk pages help editors improve articles. We learned that new editors who use talk pages make more edits to the main namespace than new editors who don't use talk pages.

File:50 million desktop visual editor edits.png
Seven years ago this week, the Editing team made the visual editor available by default to all logged-in editors using the desktop site at the English Wikipedia. Here's what happened since its introduction:
- The 50 millionth edit using the visual editor on desktop was made this year. More than 10 million edits have been made here at the English Wikipedia.
- More than 2 million new articles have been created in the visual editor. More than 600,000 of these new articles were created during 2019.
- Almost 5 million edits on the mobile site have been made with the visual editor. Most of these edits have been made since the Editing team started improving the mobile visual editor in 2018.
- The proportion of all edits made using the visual editor has been increasing every year.
- Editors have made more than 7 million edits in the 2017 wikitext editor, including starting 600,000 new articles in it. The 2017 wikitext editor is VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode. You can enable it in your preferences.
- On 17 November 2019, the [https://discuss-space.wmflabs.org/t/first-edit-made-to-wikipedia-from-outer-space/2254 first edit from outer space] was made in the mobile visual editor.
- In 2019, 35% of the edits by newcomers, and half of their first edits, were made using the visual editor. This percentage has been increasing every year since the tool became available.

Editing news 2020 #4
= Reply tool =
File:Reply Tool weekly edits- March - June, 2020.png
The Reply tool has been available as a Beta Feature at the Arabic, Dutch, French and Hungarian Wikipedias since 31 March 2020. The first analysis showed positive results.
- More than 300 editors used the Reply tool at these four Wikipedias. They posted more than 7,400 replies during the study period.
- Of the people who posted a comment with the Reply tool, about 70% of them used the tool multiple times. About 60% of them used it on multiple days.
- Comments from Wikipedia editors are positive. ("I think the tool has a significant impact; it saves time to reply while the classic way is to move with a mouse to the Edit link to edit the section or the page which is generally far away from the comment. And the user reaches to the edit box so quickly to use the Reply tool.")[https://ar.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?diff=49242252&oldid=49242144]
The Editing team released the Reply tool as a Beta Feature at eight other Wikipedias in early August. Those Wikipedias are in the Chinese, Czech, Georgian, Serbian, Sorani Kurdish, Swedish, Catalan, and Korean languages. If you would like to use the Reply tool at your wiki, please tell User talk:Whatamidoing (WMF).
The Reply tool is still in active development. Per request from the Dutch Wikipedia and other editors, you will be able to customize the edit summary. (The default edit summary is "Reply".) A "ping" feature is available in the Reply tool's visual editing mode. This feature searches for usernames. Per request from the Arabic Wikipedia, each wiki will be able to set its own preferred symbol for pinging editors. Per request from editors at the Japanese and Hungarian Wikipedias, each wiki can define a preferred signature prefix in the page MediaWiki:Discussiontools-signature-prefix. For example, some languages omit spaces before signatures. Other communities want to add a dash or a non-breaking space.
= New requirements for user signatures =
- The new requirements for custom user signatures began on 6 July 2020. If you try to create a custom signature that does not meet the requirements, you will get an error message.
- Existing custom signatures that do not meet the new requirements will be unaffected temporarily. Eventually, all custom signatures will need to meet the new requirements. You can [https://signatures.toolforge.org check your signature and see lists of active editors] whose custom signatures need to be corrected. Volunteers have been contacting editors who need to change their custom signatures. If you need to change your custom signature, then please read the help page.
= Next: New discussion tool =
Next, the team will be working on a tool for quickly and easily starting a new discussion section to a talk page. To follow the development of this new tool, please put the New Discussion Tool project page on your watchlist.

Testing new talk page software
hi Shanluan! Two questions for you about a project I am helping to lead at the Wikimedia Foundation to make it easier for people who are new to Wikipedia to use talk pages:
- Do you think some members of AfroCrowd would be interested in trying a new tool we are building to make it easier to start new conversations on talk pages?
- If yes, can you recommend a good place for me to post information about how people can test this new tool?
...initially, I thought posting on the Meetup/NYC/AfroCrowd/Home talk page might be a good place to post. Although, I didn't see any activity on there. So, I had a look at the main page's [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/AfroCrowd/Home&action=history history page] to see who had been editing it. There, I saw your username showing up quite a bit and thought it would be worthwhile to send you a message, thus how I arrived here 👋^ _ ^ . PPelberg (WMF) (talk) 00:43, 18 December 2020 (UTC)

We will begin the event with the debut of a new video celebrating our community. Editing news 2021 #1
= Reply tool =
File:Junior Contributor Reply Tool and full page edit completion rate.png
The Reply tool is available at most other Wikipedias.
- The Reply tool has been deployed as an opt-out preference to all editors at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.
- It is also available as a Beta Feature at almost all Wikipedias except for the English, Russian, and German-language Wikipedias. If it is not available at your wiki, you can request it by following these simple instructions.
Research notes:
- As of January 2021, more than 3,500 editors have used the Reply tool to post about 70,000 comments.
- There is preliminary data from the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedia on the Reply tool. Junior Contributors who use the Reply tool are more likely to publish the comments that they start writing than those who use full-page wikitext editing.[https://nbviewer.jupyter.org/github/wikimedia-research/Discussion-tools-analysis-2020/blob/master/Engagement-Metrics/Reply-Tool-Workflow-Engagement-Metrics.ipynb#Reply-Tool-(Wikitext-and-VE)-vs-Full-Page-Wikitext]
- The Editing and Parsing teams have significantly reduced the number of edits that affect other parts of the page. About 0.3% of edits did this during the last month.[https://dtcheck.toolforge.org/] Some of the remaining changes are automatic corrections for Special:LintErrors.
- 30px A large A/B test will start soon.[https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T252057] This is part of the process to offer the Reply tool to everyone. During this test, half of all editors at 24 Wikipedias (not including the English Wikipedia) will have the Reply tool automatically enabled, and half will not. Editors at those Wikipeedias can still turn it on or off for their own accounts in Special:Preferences.
= New discussion tool =
File:New Discussion Tool v1.0.png prototype.]]
The new tool for starting new discussions (new sections) will join the Discussion tools in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures at the end of January. You can try the tool for yourself.[https://patchdemo.wmflabs.org/wikis/3e14959a196db0f7b0c32a35c99dc0fc/w/index.php/Project:Teahouse] You can leave feedback in this thread or on the talk page.
= Next: Notifications =
File:White square with question mark.png
During Talk pages consultation 2019, editors said that it should be easier to know about new activity in conversations they are interested in. The Notifications project is just beginning. What would help you become aware of new comments? What's working with the current system? Which pages at your wiki should the team look at? Please post your advice at mw:Talk:Talk pages project/Notifications.

File:Reply Tool A-B test comment completion.png
Earlier this year, the Editing team ran a large study of the Reply Tool. The main goal was to find out whether the Reply Tool helped newer editors communicate on wiki. The second goal was to see whether the comments that newer editors made using the tool needed to be reverted more frequently than comments newer editors made with the existing wikitext page editor.
The key results were:
- Newer editors who had automatic ("default on") access to the Reply tool were [https://wikimedia-research.github.io/Reply-tools-analysis-2021/ more likely] to post a comment on a talk page.
- The comments that newer editors made with the Reply Tool were also [https://wikimedia-research.github.io/Reply-tools-analysis-2021/ less likely] to be reverted than the comments that newer editors made with page editing.
These results give the Editing team confidence that the tool is helpful.
Looking ahead
The team is planning to make the Reply tool available to everyone as an opt-out preference in the coming months. This has already happened at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.
The next step is to resolve a technical challenge. Then, they will deploy the Reply tool first to the Wikipedias that participated in the study. After that, they will deploy it, in stages, to the other Wikipedias and all WMF-hosted wikis.
You can turn on "Discussion Tools" in Beta Features now. After you get the Reply tool, you can change your preferences at any time in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion.

[[Wikipedia:Proposed deletion|Proposed deletion]] of [[:Meetup/ WikiCaribbean/ Wiki Caribbean Festival 2021]]
The article :Meetup/ WikiCaribbean/ Wiki Caribbean Festival 2021 has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
This is promotional content, but because it (appears) to relate to the Wikimedia movement I don't want to just A7 it until someone can figure out what exactly it is about. However, the one thing that is clear is that it is in the wrong namespace, but I don't know where it belongs.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{Tlc|proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{Tlc|proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Speedy deletion nomination of Meetup/ WikiCaribbean/ Wiki Caribbean Festival 2021
Hello Shanluan,
I wanted to let you know that I just tagged :Meetup/ WikiCaribbean/ Wiki Caribbean Festival 2021 for deletion, because it seems to be a test. Did you know that the Wikipedia Sandbox is available for testing out edits?
If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can [//en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title={{urlencode:Talk:Meetup/ WikiCaribbean/ Wiki Caribbean Festival 2021}}&action=edit§ion=new&preload=Template:Hangon_preload&preloadtitle=This+page+should+not+be+speedy+deleted+because...+ contest this deletion], but don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.
You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks!
