Editing news 2021 #1

= Reply tool =

File:Junior Contributor Reply Tool and full page edit completion rate.png

The Reply tool is available at most other Wikipedias.

  • The Reply tool has been deployed as an opt-out preference to all editors at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.
  • It is also available as a Beta Feature at almost all Wikipedias except for the English, Russian, and German-language Wikipedias. If it is not available at your wiki, you can request it by following these simple instructions.

Research notes:

  • As of January 2021, more than 3,500 editors have used the Reply tool to post about 70,000 comments.
  • There is preliminary data from the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedia on the Reply tool. Junior Contributors who use the Reply tool are more likely to publish the comments that they start writing than those who use full-page wikitext editing.[https://nbviewer.jupyter.org/github/wikimedia-research/Discussion-tools-analysis-2020/blob/master/Engagement-Metrics/Reply-Tool-Workflow-Engagement-Metrics.ipynb#Reply-Tool-(Wikitext-and-VE)-vs-Full-Page-Wikitext]
  • The Editing and Parsing teams have significantly reduced the number of edits that affect other parts of the page. About 0.3% of edits did this during the last month.[https://dtcheck.toolforge.org/] Some of the remaining changes are automatic corrections for Special:LintErrors.
  • 30px A large A/B test will start soon.[https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T252057] This is part of the process to offer the Reply tool to everyone. During this test, half of all editors at 24 Wikipedias (not including the English Wikipedia) will have the Reply tool automatically enabled, and half will not. Editors at those Wikipeedias can still turn it on or off for their own accounts in Special:Preferences.

= New discussion tool =

File:New Discussion Tool v1.0.png prototype.]]

The new tool for starting new discussions (new sections) will join the Discussion tools in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures at the end of January. You can try the tool for yourself.[https://patchdemo.wmflabs.org/wikis/3e14959a196db0f7b0c32a35c99dc0fc/w/index.php/Project:Teahouse] You can leave feedback in this thread or on the talk page.

= Next: Notifications =

File:White square with question mark.png

During Talk pages consultation 2019, editors said that it should be easier to know about new activity in conversations they are interested in. The Notifications project is just beginning. What would help you become aware of new comments? What's working with the current system? Which pages at your wiki should the team look at? Please post your advice at mw:Talk:Talk pages project/Notifications.

:*A request for comment is in progress to remove F7 (invalid fair-use claim) subcriterion a, which covers immediate deletion of non-free media with invalid fair-use tags.

"destruction" vs "significant damage"

In the article "Soft Landing", I had changed "significant damage or destruction" to just "significant damage". I felt that "without causing significant damage" included "without causing the destruction".

Why do you feel it is important to include the phrase "or destruction"?

Jmichael ll (talk) 16:46, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

:{{u|Jmichael ll}} "Significant damage" and "destruction" are two distinct terms. "Significant damage" generally means heavy but repairable damage, while "destruction" means heavy, non-repairable damage. A soft landing results in neither significant damage nor destruction. - ZLEA T\C 18:17, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

::I don't think anyone would say "it was destroyed, but it did not suffer significant damage".

::Jmichael ll (talk) 03:04, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

:::{{u|Jmichael ll}} One also would not say "It crashed, but did not land", though "crash" and "land" have two distict meanings. - ZLEA T\C 14:39, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

Northrop navbox

Hi, you changed the scope of Template:Northrop aircraft to include aircraft engines last June but I can't easily see the engine article links. Can you help? Cheers Nimbus (Cumulus nimbus floats by) 11:11, 16 May 2021 (UTC)

:{{u|Nimbus227}} I wasn't actually the one to change the scope of the navbox. I only noticed the following text in the template, "Only aircraft, aero engines, and missiles are linked here," so I added "aircraft engines" to the header. I just went through the template and found that only one aircraft engine, the Northrop-Hendy XT37, is actually linked (N-10 and N-19 in the company designations). - ZLEA T\C 14:45, 16 May 2021 (UTC)

:I just added an engines section to the template. - ZLEA T\C 14:47, 16 May 2021 (UTC)

TheWikiWizard-May 2021

Hello, ZLEA! Here is the May 2021 issue of TheWikiWizard.

=Wikipedia News=

  • The Simple English Wikipedia was mentioned in a article online very recently, you can read the article [https://lifehacker.com/get-easier-to-understand-results-with-simple-english-wi-1846763246 here].
  • Meta is looking for Board Election Volunteers you can read up more by following that link.
  • The English Wikipedia, has just passed 6,300,000 articles!

= Tip of the Month =

This tip is one of the many ways to combat spam on Wikipedia:

  • On Wikipedia, articles either meet the General Notability Guideline or not. When you come across a new article, it is extremely important to determine if it is a real article, or just a spam article. Start with a search on Google, for reliable sources, if you get none in return, then look at the article for non-NPOV content, also scan the references section in the article to see what sources it uses, and check the 'other languages' section and Wikidata to see if it is on other Wikipedias. If other Wikipedias have the same content and/or a CSD or AfD tag (WP:AFD) it is likely spam or not notable, so you can then nominate it for deletion to get input, remember that CSD criterion does not always apply to these articles depending on the content/contex. Also remember to check for copyright violations via [https://copyvios.toolforge.org/ earwig's]

=Memorials=

  • {{noping|SlimVirgin}} has sadly passed away this month, you can read more about SlimVirgin's passing here
  • {{noping|Moroboshi}} also sadly passed away earlier this month.

{{center|1=Our condolences go out to the editors and their families, thank you for your work on Wikimedia projects.}}

Reverted changes in The End

Dear ZLEA:

If you remember, you undid my last change. I added it because in the Spanish version of this wiki there was this phrase, which says:

A pesar de que ésta es la última página de Wikipedia, existe el rumor de que hay una página después de ésta, aunque se mantiene sin contenido. ¿La encontraste?

I just literally translated and put on the English version of this webpage, so no vandalism was intended.

If you understand, please revert your reversion of my edit.

Thank you: — Preceding unsigned comment added by Carel3DS (talkcontribs) 07:51, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

:{{u|Carel3DS}} The translated text you added does not fit with the English version of the page and it doesn't make much sense. Thank you for trying to help, though. - ZLEA T\C 13:48, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

You welcome :,)

USAF amphibious aircraft

Just to note that A1 to 8, 11, 13 and 15 were not used as part of change to the A (Amphibian) designation so it is wrong to list them in your new A template. MilborneOne (talk) 17:58, 30 May 2021 (UTC)

:Having another look at this we either need to put the OAs back where they were or create a new OA template and remove (or add a note) the not used ones from your new template. MilborneOne (talk) 18:10, 30 May 2021 (UTC)

:Sorry another thought is you could add the OA sequence to your new Amphibian template. MilborneOne (talk) 18:12, 30 May 2021 (UTC)

:Noted on the aircraft project page so others know we have an issue with the missing OAs. MilborneOne (talk) 18:23, 30 May 2021 (UTC)

Editing news 2021 #2

Read this in another languageSubscription list for this newsletter

File:Reply Tool A-B test comment completion.png

Earlier this year, the Editing team ran a large study of the Reply Tool. The main goal was to find out whether the Reply Tool helped newer editors communicate on wiki. The second goal was to see whether the comments that newer editors made using the tool needed to be reverted more frequently than comments newer editors made with the existing wikitext page editor.

The key results were:

  • Newer editors who had automatic ("default on") access to the Reply tool were [https://wikimedia-research.github.io/Reply-tools-analysis-2021/ more likely] to post a comment on a talk page.
  • The comments that newer editors made with the Reply Tool were also [https://wikimedia-research.github.io/Reply-tools-analysis-2021/ less likely] to be reverted than the comments that newer editors made with page editing.

These results give the Editing team confidence that the tool is helpful.

Looking ahead

The team is planning to make the Reply tool available to everyone as an opt-out preference in the coming months. This has already happened at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.

The next step is to resolve a technical challenge. Then, they will deploy the Reply tool first to the Wikipedias that participated in the study. After that, they will deploy it, in stages, to the other Wikipedias and all WMF-hosted wikis.

You can turn on "Discussion Tools" in Beta Features now. After you get the Reply tool, you can change your preferences at any time in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion.

:*IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

spirit of Casia

thank you for your comment on Spirit of Cascia- much appreciated. I responded already with Aviation style headings and improving readability per your desire. Need a little help deleting that red ink because it in references and it in References section and being relative beginner, not sure how to delete it. please help/advise. thank you Mr./Ms.ZLEA ! RDBACE1 (talk) 05:29, 8 July 2021 (UTC)

:ZLEA: I note you have been working on Draft:Spirit of Cascia to improve it. Right now Spirit of Cascia redirects to Project Schoolflight. There is a large degree of overlap in these two articles. I have been looking at Draft:Spirit of Cascia and am not sure, if you strip out the overlap, that there will be much left. Perhaps it makes more sense to just incorporate what little new there is into Project Schoolflight. What do you think? - Ahunt (talk) 20:23, 8 July 2021 (UTC)

::{{u|Ahunt}} Thanks for pointing that out, I'll look into it. - ZLEA T\C 20:28, 8 July 2021 (UTC)

Thanks guys- Yes alot of overlap since it is plane #1 pf project schoolflight so understandable is the redirect. thank you both for your efforts and the redirect probably is correct in telling its story so you 2 I appreciate both your guidance and assistance. warmest cheers to both! They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! No further nominations will be accepted after that time. Voting will commence on 15 September. If you have any questions, you can contact any member of the current coord team. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:43, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

U.S. military aircraft renaming proposal

Howdy! Since we've been effectively collaborating on the grand reshuffle of U.S. military aircraft lists, I thought I would discuss an idea with you before I formally suggest it. I'd like to move List of military aircraft of the United States (1909–1919) to List of undesignated military aircraft of the United States (pre–1922). In other words, there would be two lists of undesignated aircraft—a modern list and a WWI-era list. Here's my reasoning:

  • All of the U.S. armed services have had one designation system or another continuously in effect since 1922. This list focuses on the era when undesignated aircraft were the norm rather than the exception. 1922 is a logical and easily understandable break point.
  • The list would not be overlong or scattershot; it would not have both the Curtiss Jenny and Citation Excel on it.
  • The source article would not require major surgery. Basically, the 1911 and 1914 U.S. Navy aircraft would be removed, and the lead would be edited—done!

Thoughts, feelings, opinions? Carguychris (talk) 13:01, 22 September 2021 (UTC)

:{{u|Carguychris}} I was actually thinking the same thing, but one question I have is whether there are enough post-1922 undesignated aircraft to merit a list separate from the pre-1922 list. To my knowledge, most undesignated aircraft used by the US post-1922 were never officially acquired, being loans instead. - ZLEA T\C 14:18, 22 September 2021 (UTC)

::{{u|ZLEA}} On second thought, I think I'll keep it simple and propose List of undesignated military aircraft of the United States, and we'll consider splitting it later. Carguychris (talk) 15:09, 22 September 2021 (UTC)

:::{{u|ZLEA}} I've proposed the page move as suggested; you're invited to comment. Carguychris (talk) 19:31, 23 September 2021 (UTC)

Reorganization of List of undesignated military aircraft of the United States

Howdy! I'm in the process of fleshing out the List of undesignated military aircraft of the United States, and to cut down on the repetition, I'm toying with a presentation similar to the designated aircraft lists, i.e. mission, then manufacturer, then aircraft type. I think this presentation will make the list easier to follow, but it's also going to make it substantially longer, so I'd like your input. A dummy version of the "World War I to World War II" section can be viewed in my sandbox. Carguychris (talk) 17:09, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

:{{u|Carguychris}} I like the look of it, but one problem I have with separating the list by eras such as "World War I to World War II" is that such eras are not good cutoff points for many branches of the US military. A better way to separate the list (in my opinion) would be by the branches themselves:

:*Army (aircraft operated by the Army and Signal Corps but not by the USAAS/AAC/AAF)

:*Air Force (including the USAAS/AAC/AAF)

:*Navy

:*Marine Corps

:*Coast Guard (the USCG is still military even if it is non-combat)

:*Space Force (not sure if the USSF uses its own aircraft or borrows from other branches)

:Another thing to consider is that since the undesignated aircraft do not follow any numeric sequence, perhaps we should consider something like the tables of List of aircraft of the Royal Air Force. I'm thinking that this would be more convenient if we want to list the aircraft by entry into service date. - ZLEA T\C 17:47, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

::I actually really like the idea of emulating the RAF list because it conveys a lot of information neatly and it's sortable. I hadn't thought of that, thanks! Also, I was already considering eliminating the eras for the exact reasons you suggest, but I'm trying to first formulate a solid plan for reorganizing the list so I don't have to do major surgery twice. Carguychris (talk) 17:58, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

:::I'm going to start an example table in my sandbox. - ZLEA T\C 17:59, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

::::Comments on the proposed breakdown of the service branches: my brief research suggests that the U.S. Coast Guard has only ever operated a small handful of undesignated aircraft, most of which were borrowed directly from the Navy. A brief USCG list like the ones at the bottom of the RAF list article would probably suffice, rather than a full-blown table. Also, USMC aviation has always operated in practice as a branch of naval aviation, so it's often impractical to disentangle USN aircraft from USMC aircraft, and many reference sources don't even try to do so. They may need to go in the same table. Carguychris (talk) 20:52, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

:::::{{u|Carguychris}} I've started the tables in my sandbox. Feel free to add to them or copy them to your own sandbox. - ZLEA T\C 00:45, 14 October 2021 (UTC)

::::::I like it! However, I like how the RAF table has a brief aircraft description under "Notes" and blank spaces for unknown dates rather than question marks, so I think I'll make those changes. I'll copy those tables to my sandbox and start building a similar USN/USMC table. Carguychris (talk) 17:00, 14 October 2021 (UTC)

Welcome to the eighth issue of the English Wikipedia's Bots Newsletter, your source for all things bot. Maintainers disappeared to parts unknown... bots awakening from the slumber of æons... hundreds of thousands of short descriptions... these stories, and more, are brought to you by Wikipedia's most distinguished newsletter about bots.

Our last issue was in August 2019, so there's quite a bit of catching up to do. Due to the vast quantity of things that have happened, the next few issues will only cover a few months at a time. This month, we'll go from September 2019 through the end of the year. I won't bore you with further introductions — instead, I'll bore you with a newsletter about bots.

Overall

  • Between September and December 2019, there were 33 BRFAs. Of these, {{yeac}} 25 were approved, and 8 were unsuccessful ({{nayd}} 3 denied, {{idkc}} 3 withdrawn, and File:Image-Symbol wait old.svg 2 expired).

September 2019

  • TParis goes away, UTRSBot goes kaput: Beeblebrox noted that the bot for maintaining on-wiki records of UTRS appeals stopped working a while ago. TParis, the semi-retired user who had previously run it, said they were "unlikely to return to actively editing Wikipedia", and the bot had been vanquished by trolls submitting bogus UTRS requests on behalf of real blocked users. While OAuth was a potential fix, neither maintainer had time to implement it. TParis offered to access to the UTRS WMFLabs account to any admin identified with the WMF: "I miss you guys a whole lot [...] but I've also moved on with my life. Good luck, let me know how I can help". Ultimately, SQL ended up in charge. Some progress was made, and the bot continued to work another couple months — but as of press time, UTRSBot has not edited since November 2019.
  • Article-measuring contest resumed: The list of Wikipedians by article count, which had lain dead for several years, was triumphantly resurrected by GreenC following a bot request.

November 2019

December 2019

In the next issue of Bots Newsletter:

What's next for our intrepid band of coders, maintainers and approvers?

  • What happens when two bots want to clerk the same page?
  • What happens when an adminbot goes hog wild?
  • Will reFill ever get fixed?
  • What's up with ListeriaBot, anyway?
  • Python 3.4 deprecation? In my PyWikiBot? (It's more likely than you think!)

These questions will be answered — and new questions raised — by the January 2022 Bots Newsletter. Tune in, or miss out!

HESA Saeqeh

hellow. the word "saeqeh" is 100% arabic meaning thunderbolt. Azarakhsh is the persian word for thunderbolt.Sikorsky Cyclone (talk) 10:18, 20 December 2021 (UTC)

:{{u|Sikorsky Cyclone}} When I pop صاعقه into Google Translate, it automatically detects it as Persian for "lightning". If you read the Arabic script article, you will notice that the first sentence states that the script is used not only used for Arabic, but many other languages as well (the first listed being Persian). Now I ask you, do you read Arabic script? Can you be 100% certain that the script is not meant to be Persian? - ZLEA T\C 15:16, 20 December 2021 (UTC)

206 navbox

Hi Z, thanks for creating the :Template:JetRanger family navbox. I actually started on doing one last week, but realized I didn't have enough time and closed it out uncreated. I was also thinking about one for the F-5 and F-18 families, since they are distantly but directly related. Do you think that would work? Regards. BilCat (talk) 00:15, 23 December 2021 (UTC)

Btw, I was going to include the Bell 47J Ranger, as it's sort of a predecessor, especially of the HO-4. Do you think that would be worth adding? BilCat (talk) 00:23, 23 December 2021 (UTC)

:{{u|BilCat}} I had considered including the Model 47J in the navbox, but I had found no evidence that the Ranger and JetRanger were actually related other than name. I would not be opposed to adding it if we can find that they shared a development lineage. As for an F-5/F-18 navbox, I think it would work. - ZLEA T\C 01:13, 23 December 2021 (UTC)

::{{u|BilCat}} On the 47J, it's probably more of a "spiritual" connection, as shown by the name, with Bell wanting to capitalize on the previous name, and it worked. I used to have a source that talked about the redesign of the 206, and it might have mentioned that sort of connection. As to the F-5 and F-18, there's a definite evolutionary design connection, which is covered in the YF-17 article, though there are no common parts, of course. Also, I can see the family resemblance in the HESA Saeqeh, which is an F-5 with F-18-style twin fins. It's quite remarkable, to me anyway. BilCat (talk) 01:54, 23 December 2021 (UTC)

:::I agree about the HESA Saeqeh, along with the more blatant HESA copies. I'm working on the navbox now and am including the Iranian aircraft in the list of foreign variants. As for the 47J, I'm fine with inclusion in the JetRanger navbox as a predecessor, and possible as a variant if a direct developmental lineage can be confirmed. - ZLEA T\C 02:00, 23 December 2021 (UTC)

::::If I can jump in here - there is no design linage or parts commonality shared between the Bell 47J Ranger and the Bell 206 Jet Ranger. Bell just liked the marketing value of the Ranger name and decided to keep it for the turbine 206. - Ahunt (talk) 02:09, 23 December 2021 (UTC)

:::::On the 47J, I think we could put it in a See also in the footer. Z, thanks for going ahead and creating the F-5 navbox. Though I fully intended to do it myself, and I wasn't fishing for someone to do it for me (although I have been known to do that!), I do appreciate it very much. ::::::I don't mind creating these navboxes. It gives me something to do between semesters when I don't have access to my university's library to create obscure aircraft articles. - ZLEA T\C 03:31, 23 December 2021 (UTC)

:::::::No problem. I was going to name it "F-5 and F-18 families", and have the two types separated to make clear that while there is a direct connection, it's a distant one. Do you think that would work better? BilCat (talk) 03:48, 23 December 2021 (UTC)

::::::::That would probably be better. - ZLEA T\C 03:49, 23 December 2021 (UTC)

:::::::::::I didn't think to nest them. It's done. - ZLEA T\C 04:01, 23 December 2021 (UTC)

:::::::::{{tq|On the 47J, I think we could put it in a See also in the footer. }} - works for me! - Ahunt (talk) 03:52, 23 December 2021 (UTC)
