Recent changes
- You can choose to be reminded when you have not added an edit summary. This can be done in your preferences. This could conflict with the CAPTCHA. This has now been fixed. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T12729]
- You can link to specific log entries. You can get these links for example by clicking the timestamps in the log. Until now, such links to private log entries showed no entry even if you had permission to view private log entries. The links now show the entry. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T269761]
- Admins can use the abuse filter tool to automatically prevent bad edits. Three changes happened last week:
- The filter editing interface now shows syntax errors while you type. This is similar to JavaScript pages. It also shows a warning for regular expressions that match the empty string. New warnings will be added later. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T187686]
- Oversighters can now hide multiple filter log entries at once using checkboxes on Special:AbuseLog. This is how the usual revision deletion works. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T260904]
- When a filter matches too many actions after it has been changed it is "throttled". The most powerful actions are disabled. This is to avoid many editors getting blocked when an administrator made a mistake. The administrator will now get a notification about this "throttle".
- File:Octicons-tools.svg There is a new tool to [https://skins.wmflabs.org/?#/add build new skins]. You can also [https://skins.wmflabs.org/?#/ see] existing skins. You can give feedback. [https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2020-December/094130.html]
- File:Octicons-tools.svg Bots using the API no longer watch pages automatically based on account preferences. Setting the
watchlist
towatch
will still work. This is to reduce the size of the watchlist data in the database. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T258108] - File:Octicons-tools.svg Scribunto's file metadata now includes length. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T209679]
- File:Octicons-tools.svg CSS and JavaScript code pages now have link anchors to [https://patchdemo.wmflabs.org/wikis/40e4795d4448b55a6d8c46ff414bcf78/w/index.php/MediaWiki:En.js#L-125 line numbers]. You can use wikilinks like :w:en:MediaWiki:Common.js#L-50. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T29531]
- File:Octicons-sync.svg There was a new version of MediaWiki last week. You can read a detailed log of all 763 changes. Most of them are very small and will not affect you.
Changes later this week
- File:Octicons-sync.svg The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from {{#time:j xg|2021-01-12|en}}. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from {{#time:j xg|2021-01-13|en}}. It will be on all wikis from {{#time:j xg|2021-01-14|en}} (calendar).

Future changes
- The Growth team plans to add features to get more visitors to edit to more Wikipedias. You can help [https://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Special:Translate&group=ext-growthexperiments&language=&filter=&action=translate translating the interface].
- You will be able to read but not to edit Wikimedia Commons for a short time on [https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?iso=20210126T07 {{#time:j xg|2021-01-26|en}} at 07:00 (UTC)]. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T271791]
- MassMessage posts could be automatically timestamped in the future. This is because MassMessage senders can now send pages using MassMessage. Pages are more difficult to sign. If there are times when a MassMessage post should not be timestamped you can let the developers know.

Editing news 2021 #1
= Reply tool =
File:Junior Contributor Reply Tool and full page edit completion rate.png
The Reply tool is available at most other Wikipedias.
- The Reply tool has been deployed as an opt-out preference to all editors at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.
- It is also available as a Beta Feature at almost all Wikipedias except for the English, Russian, and German-language Wikipedias. If it is not available at your wiki, you can request it by following these simple instructions.
Research notes:
- As of January 2021, more than 3,500 editors have used the Reply tool to post about 70,000 comments.
- There is preliminary data from the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedia on the Reply tool. Junior Contributors who use the Reply tool are more likely to publish the comments that they start writing than those who use full-page wikitext editing.[https://nbviewer.jupyter.org/github/wikimedia-research/Discussion-tools-analysis-2020/blob/master/Engagement-Metrics/Reply-Tool-Workflow-Engagement-Metrics.ipynb#Reply-Tool-(Wikitext-and-VE)-vs-Full-Page-Wikitext]
- The Editing and Parsing teams have significantly reduced the number of edits that affect other parts of the page. About 0.3% of edits did this during the last month.[https://dtcheck.toolforge.org/] Some of the remaining changes are automatic corrections for Special:LintErrors.
- 30px A large A/B test will start soon.[https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T252057] This is part of the process to offer the Reply tool to everyone. During this test, half of all editors at 24 Wikipedias (not including the English Wikipedia) will have the Reply tool automatically enabled, and half will not. Editors at those Wikipeedias can still turn it on or off for their own accounts in Special:Preferences.
= New discussion tool =
File:New Discussion Tool v1.0.png prototype.]]
The new tool for starting new discussions (new sections) will join the Discussion tools in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures at the end of January. You can try the tool for yourself.[https://patchdemo.wmflabs.org/wikis/3e14959a196db0f7b0c32a35c99dc0fc/w/index.php/Project:Teahouse] You can leave feedback in this thread or on the talk page.
= Next: Notifications =
File:White square with question mark.png
During Talk pages consultation 2019, editors said that it should be easier to know about new activity in conversations they are interested in. The Notifications project is just beginning. What would help you become aware of new comments? What's working with the current system? Which pages at your wiki should the team look at? Please post your advice at mw:Talk:Talk pages project/Notifications.

- IPv6 addresses were written in lowercase letters in diffs. This caused dead links since Special:Contributions only accepted uppercase letters for the IPs. This has been fixed. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T272225]
Changes later this week
- You can soon use Wikidata to link to pages on the multilingual Wikisource. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T138332]
- Often editors use a "non-breaking space" to make a gap between two items when reading but still show them together. This can be used to avoid a line break. You will now be able to add new ones via the special character tool in the 2010, 2017, and visual editors. The character will be shown in the visual editor as a space with a grey background. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T70429][https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T96666]
- File:Octicons-tools.svg Wikis use abuse filters to stop bad edits being made. Filter maintainers can now use syntax like
1.2.3.4 - 1.2.3.55
as well as the1.2.3.4/27
syntax for IP ranges. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T218074] - File:Octicons-sync.svg The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from {{#time:j xg|2021-02-02|en}}. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from {{#time:j xg|2021-02-03|en}}. It will be on all wikis from {{#time:j xg|2021-02-04|en}} (calendar).
Future changes
- Minerva is the skin Wikimedia wikis use for mobile traffic. When a page is protected and you can't edit it you can normally read the source wikicode. This doesn't work on Minerva on mobile devices. This is being fixed. Some text might overlap. This is because your community needs to update MediaWiki:Protectedpagetext to work on mobile. You can read more. [https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Recommendations_for_mobile_friendly_articles_on_Wikimedia_wikis#Inline_styles_should_not_use_properties_that_impact_sizing_and_positioning][https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Recommendations_for_mobile_friendly_articles_on_Wikimedia_wikis#Avoid_tables_for_anything_except_data]
- File:Octicons-tools.svg Cloud VPS and Toolforge will change the IP address they use to contact the wikis. The new IP address will be
185.15.56.1
. This will happen on February 8. You can read more.

Recent changes
- Wikis using the Growth team tools can now show the name of a newcomer's mentor anywhere through a magic word. This can be used for welcome messages or userboxes.
- A new version of the VideoCutTool is now available. It enables cropping, trimming, audio disabling, and rotating video content. It is being created as part of the developer outreach programs.
Problems
- There was a problem with the job queue. This meant some functions did not save changes and mass messages were delayed. This did not affect wiki edits. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T275437]
- Some editors may not be logged in to their accounts automatically in the latest versions of Firefox and Safari. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T226797]

:*A request for comment is open that proposes a process for the community to revoke administrative permissions. This follows a 2019 RfC in favor of creating one such a policy.
:*A request for comment is in progress to remove F7 (invalid fair-use claim) subcriterion a, which covers immediate deletion of non-free media with invalid fair-use tags.
:*A request for comment seeks to grant page movers the {{code|delete-redirect}} userright, which allows moving a page over a single-revision redirect, regardless of that redirect's target. The full proposal is at Wikipedia:Page mover/delete-redirect.
:*A request for comment asks if sysops may {{tq|place the General sanctions/Coronavirus disease 2019 editnotice template on pages in scope that do not have page-specific sanctions}}?
:*There is a discussion in progress concerning automatic protection of each day's featured article with Pending Changes protection.
File:Octicons-tools.svg Technical news
:*When blocking an IPv6 address with Twinkle, there is now a checkbox with the option to just block the /64 range. When doing so, you can still leave a block template on the initial, single IP address' talkpage.
:*When protecting a page with Twinkle, you can now add a note if doing so was in response to a request at WP:RfPP, and even link to the specific revision.
:*There have been a number of reported issues with Pending Changes. Most problems setting protection appear to have been resolved (phab:T273317) but other issues with autoaccepting edits persist (phab:T275322).

If you prefer the Reference Tooltips or Navigation-Popups gadget you can keep using them. If so Reference Previews won't be shown. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T271206][https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:WMDE_Technical_Wishes/ReferencePreviews]

=Wikipedia News=
- [https://www.wired.com/story/wikipedia-finally-asking-big-tech-to-pay-up/ I came across an interesting article about Wikipedia].
- {{noping|TJMSmith}} had a successful RFA, Congrats!
=Humour=
This section was written by User:Canadian Otaku, I hope you enjoy it as much as I (Tsugaru) did!
- If you edit Wikipedia around 1-5 AM, beware, as any admin could block you for being up too late!
- It's really easy to break Wikipedia, just click here.
- Ignore people telling you to stop putting "Hrrnngg,,,beans" on the article Bean (film), they don't know what good edits are.
- Jimbo is god, and can do anything he wants to!
=Notes=
- There are 2 new editors now, one of them {{noping|Berrely}}, and {{noping|CanadianOtaku}}. As mentioned Berrely is our new proofreader (typos beware) and Canadian Otaku is now going to be writing our Humor sections, I hope you enjoyed it. Thanks for joining us, and remember, if you want to join, just let me know!

Recent changes
- There is a Wikipedia app for KaiOS phones. They don't have a touch screen so readers navigate with the phone keys. There is now a [https://wikimedia.github.io/wikipedia-kaios/sim.html simulator] so you can see what it looks like.
- The reply tool and new discussion tool are now available as the "{{int:discussiontools-preference-label}}" beta feature in almost all wikis except German Wikipedia.
Problems
- You will be able to read but not edit twelve wikis for a short period of time on [https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?iso=20210323T06 {{#time:j xg|2021-03-23|{{PAGELANGUAGE}}}} at 06:00 (UTC)]. This can also affect password changes, logging in to new wikis, global renames and changing or confirming emails. This could take 30 minutes but will probably be much faster.
Changes later this week
- File:Octicons-sync.svg The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from {{#time:j xg|2021-03-23|en}}. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from {{#time:j xg|2021-03-24|en}}. It will be on all wikis from {{#time:j xg|2021-03-25|en}} (calendar).
- Syntax highlighting colours will change to be easier to read. This will soon come to the first wikis. [https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WMDE_Technical_Wishes/Improved_Color_Scheme_of_Syntax_Highlighting]
Future changes
- Flagged revisions will no longer have multiple tags like "tone" or "depth". It will also only have one tier. This was changed because very few wikis used these features and they make the tool difficult to maintain. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T185664][https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T277883]
- File:Octicons-tools.svg Gadgets and user scripts can access variables about the current page in JavaScript. In 2015 this was moved from
wg*
tomw.config
.wg*
will soon no longer work. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T72470]

- Editors can collapse part of an article so you have to click on it to see it. When you click a link to a section inside collapsed content it will now expand to show the section. instead of2010-12

could be confused with2010-2012

The earlier plan was to have the preference to use both or none. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T271206][https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:WMDE_Technical_Wishes/ReferencePreviews]

"destruction" vs "significant damage"
In the article "Soft Landing", I had changed "significant damage or destruction" to just "significant damage". I felt that "without causing significant damage" included "without causing the destruction".
Why do you feel it is important to include the phrase "or destruction"?
Jmichael ll (talk) 16:46, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
:{{u|Jmichael ll}} "Significant damage" and "destruction" are two distinct terms. "Significant damage" generally means heavy but repairable damage, while "destruction" means heavy, non-repairable damage. A soft landing results in neither significant damage nor destruction. - ZLEA T\C 18:17, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
::I don't think anyone would say "it was destroyed, but it did not suffer significant damage".
::Jmichael ll (talk) 03:04, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
:::{{u|Jmichael ll}} One also would not say "It crashed, but did not land", though "crash" and "land" have two distict meanings. - ZLEA T\C 14:39, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

Hello, ZLEA! Here is the May 2021 issue of TheWikiWizard.

- The English Wikipedia, has just passed 6,300,000 articles!
= Tip of the Month =
This tip is one of the many ways to combat spam on Wikipedia:
- On Wikipedia, articles either meet the General Notability Guideline or not. When you come across a new article, it is extremely important to determine if it is a real article, or just a spam article. Start with a search on Google, for reliable sources, if you get none in return, then look at the article for non-NPOV content, also scan the references section in the article to see what sources it uses, and check the 'other languages' section and Wikidata to see if it is on other Wikipedias. If other Wikipedias have the same content and/or a CSD or AfD tag (WP:AFD) it is likely spam or not notable, so you can then nominate it for deletion to get input, remember that CSD criterion does not always apply to these articles depending on the content/contex. Also remember to check for copyright violations via [https://copyvios.toolforge.org/ earwig's]

Reverted changes in The End
Dear ZLEA:
If you remember, you undid my last change. I added it because in the Spanish version of this wiki there was this phrase, which says:
A pesar de que ésta es la última página de Wikipedia, existe el rumor de que hay una página después de ésta, aunque se mantiene sin contenido. ¿La encontraste?
I just literally translated and put on the English version of this webpage, so no vandalism was intended.
If you understand, please revert your reversion of my edit.
Thank you: — Preceding unsigned comment added by Carel3DS (talk • contribs) 07:51, 29 May 2021 (UTC)
:{{u|Carel3DS}} The translated text you added does not fit with the English version of the page and it doesn't make much sense. Thank you for trying to help, though. - ZLEA T\C 13:48, 29 May 2021 (UTC)
You welcome :,)
USAF amphibious aircraft
Just to note that A1 to 8, 11, 13 and 15 were not used as part of change to the A (Amphibian) designation so it is wrong to list them in your new A template. MilborneOne (talk) 17:58, 30 May 2021 (UTC)
:Having another look at this we either need to put the OAs back where they were or create a new OA template and remove (or add a note) the not used ones from your new template. MilborneOne (talk) 18:10, 30 May 2021 (UTC)
:Sorry another thought is you could add the OA sequence to your new Amphibian template. MilborneOne (talk) 18:12, 30 May 2021 (UTC)
:Noted on the aircraft project page so others know we have an issue with the missing OAs. MilborneOne (talk) 18:23, 30 May 2021 (UTC)

- The Wikimedia movement uses Phabricator for technical tasks. This is where we collect technical suggestions, bugs and what developers are working on. The company behind Phabricator will stop working on it. This will not change anything for the Wikimedia movement now. It could lead to changes in the future. - Searching on Wikipedia will find more results in some languages. This is mainly true for when those who search do not use the correct diacritics because they are not seen as necessary in that language. For example searching for

isn't used in German so many would writee
instead. This will work better in the future in some languages. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T219550] - File:Octicons-tools.svg The CSRF token parameters in the action API were changed in 2014. Recent changes
- Logged-in users on the mobile web can choose to use the advanced mobile mode. They now see categories in a similar way as users on desktop do. This means that some gadgets that have just been for desktop users could work for users of the mobile site too. If your wiki has such gadgets you could decide to turn them on for the mobile site too. Some gadgets probably need to be fixed to look good on mobile. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T284763]
- Language links on Wikidata now works for multilingual Wikisource. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T275958]
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Future changes
- In the future we can't show the IP of unregistered editors to everyone. This is because privacy regulations and norms have changed. There is now a rough draft of how showing the IP to those who need to see it could work.
- German Wikipedia, English Wikivoyage and 29 smaller wikis will be read-only for a few minutes on 22 June. This is planned between 5:00 and 5:30 UTC. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T284530]
- All wikis will be read-only for a few minutes in the week of 28 June. More information will be published in Tech News later. It will also be posted on individual wikis in the coming weeks. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T281515][https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T281209]

Editing news 2021 #2

File:Reply Tool A-B test comment completion.png
Earlier this year, the Editing team ran a large study of the Reply Tool. The main goal was to find out whether the Reply Tool helped newer editors communicate on wiki. The second goal was to see whether the comments that newer editors made using the tool needed to be reverted more frequently than comments newer editors made with the existing wikitext page editor.
The key results were:
- Newer editors who had automatic ("default on") access to the Reply tool were [https://wikimedia-research.github.io/Reply-tools-analysis-2021/ more likely] to post a comment on a talk page.
- The comments that newer editors made with the Reply Tool were also [https://wikimedia-research.github.io/Reply-tools-analysis-2021/ less likely] to be reverted than the comments that newer editors made with page editing.
These results give the Editing team confidence that the tool is helpful.
Looking ahead
The team is planning to make the Reply tool available to everyone as an opt-out preference in the coming months. This has already happened at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.
The next step is to resolve a technical challenge. Then, they will deploy the Reply tool first to the Wikipedias that participated in the study. After that, they will deploy it, in stages, to the other Wikipedias and all WMF-hosted wikis.
You can turn on "Discussion Tools" in Beta Features now. After you get the Reply tool, you can change your preferences at any time in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion.

- The IRC channels used for Wikipedia have changed, you can read more on it here. While TWW was aware of this in the last issue, we decided to wait and publish this in this issue, when the issue is not as new any more, and more information has been developed.
- There was quick interruption in editing on Wikipedia, that was to test server switching should an emergency happen, more details can be found here.

:*IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

:*The community authorised COVID-19 general sanctions have been superseded by the COVID-19 discretionary sanctions following a motion at a case request. Alerts given and sanctions placed under the community authorised general sanctions are now considered alerts for and sanctions under the new discretionary sanctions.

Tech News
- The next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 19 July.
Recent changes
- AutoWikiBrowser is a tool to make repetitive tasks easier. It now uses JSON.
Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage
has moved toWikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPageJSON
andWikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Config
.Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage/Version
has moved toWikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage/VersionJSON
. The tool will eventually be configured on the wiki so that you don't have to wait until the new version to add templates or regular expression fixes. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T241196]
Problems
- InternetArchiveBot helps saving online sources on some wikis. It adds them to Wayback Machine and links to them there. This is so they don't disappear if the page that was linked to is removed. It currently has a problem with linking to the wrong date when it moves pages from
archive.is
toweb.archive.org
. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T283432]
Changes later this week
- The tool to find, add and remove templates will be updated. This is to make it easier to find and use the right templates. It will come to the first wikis on 7 July. It will come to more wikis later this year. [https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WMDE_Technical_Wishes/Removing_a_template_from_a_page_using_the_VisualEditor][https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T284553]
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Future changes
- Some Wikimedia wikis use Flagged Revisions or pending changes. It hides edits from new and unregistered accounts for readers until they have been patrolled. The auto review action in Flagged Revisions will no longer be logged. All old logs of auto-review will be removed. This is because it creates a lot of logs that are not very useful. spirit of Casia
thank you for your comment on Spirit of Cascia- much appreciated. I responded already with Aviation style headings and improving readability per your desire. Need a little help deleting that red ink because it in references and it in References section and being relative beginner, not sure how to delete it. please help/advise. thank you Mr./Ms.ZLEA ! RDBACE1 (talk) 05:29, 8 July 2021 (UTC)
:ZLEA: I note you have been working on Draft:Spirit of Cascia to improve it. Right now Spirit of Cascia redirects to Project Schoolflight. There is a large degree of overlap in these two articles. I have been looking at Draft:Spirit of Cascia and am not sure, if you strip out the overlap, that there will be much left. Perhaps it makes more sense to just incorporate what little new there is into Project Schoolflight. What do you think? - Ahunt (talk) 20:23, 8 July 2021 (UTC)
::{{u|Ahunt}} Thanks for pointing that out, I'll look into it. - ZLEA T\C 20:28, 8 July 2021 (UTC)
Thanks guys- Yes alot of overlap since it is plane #1 pf project schoolflight so understandable is the redirect. thank you both for your efforts and the redirect probably is correct in telling its story so you 2 I appreciate both your guidance and assistance. warmest cheers to both! List of presidents of the United States on currency
I undid your reversion of my edits to List of presidents of the United States on currency because I was bringing that page into compliance with MOS:JOBTITLES. I know you did it in good faith, so I just wanted to reach out so there's no misunderstanding.
I appreciate the good work you're doing! --Woko Sapien (talk) 14:53, 28 July 2021 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- File:Octicons-tools.svg If your wiki uses markup like orwithout the required
dir
attribute, then these will no longer work in 2 weeks. There is a short-term fix that can be added to your local wiki's Common.css page, which is explained at T287701. From now on, all usages should include the full attributes, for example:or. This also applies to some other HTML tags, such asspan
orcode
. You can find existing examples on your wiki that need to be updated, using the instructions at T287701.- Reminder: Wikimedia has migrated to the Libera Chat IRC network, from the old Freenode network. Local documentation should be updated.
Problems
- Last week, all wikis had slow access or no access for 30 minutes. There was a problem with generating dynamic lists of articles on the Russian Wikinews, due to the bulk import of 200,000+ new articles over 3 days, which led to database problems. The problematic feature has been disabled on that wiki and developers are discussing if it can be fixed properly. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T287380][https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Incident_documentation/2021-07-26_ruwikinews_DynamicPageList]
Changes later this week
- When adding links to a page using VisualEditor or the 2017 wikitext editor, disambiguation pages will now only appear at the bottom of search results. This is because users do not often want to link to disambiguation pages. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T285510]
- File:Octicons-sync.svg The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from {{#time:j xg|2021-08-03|en}}. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from {{#time:j xg|2021-08-04|en}}. It will be on all wikis from {{#time:j xg|2021-08-05|en}} (calendar).
Future changes
- The team of the Wikipedia app for Android is working on communication in the app. The developers are working on how to talk to other editors and get notifications. You can read more. They are looking for users who want to test the plans. Any editor who has an Android phone and is willing to download the app can do this.
- The Beta Feature for {{int:discussiontools-preference-label}} will be updated in the coming weeks. You will be able to subscribe to individual sections on a talk page at more wikis. You can test this now by adding
?dtenable=1
to the end of the talk page's URL ([https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meta_talk:Sandbox?dtenable=1 example]).

Problems
- You can read but not edit 17 wikis for a few minutes on 10 August. This is planned at [https://zonestamp.toolforge.org/1628571650 05:00 UTC]. This is because of work on the database. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T287449]
Changes later this week
- The Wikimania Hackathon will take place remotely on 13 August, starting at 5:00 UTC, for 24 hours. You can participate in many ways. You can still propose projects and sessions.
- File:Octicons-sync.svg The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from {{#time:j xg|2021-08-10|en}}. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from {{#time:j xg|2021-08-11|en}}. It will be on all wikis from {{#time:j xg|2021-08-12|en}} (calendar).
- File:Octicons-tools.svg The old CSS
will not be supported after 12 August. Instead, templates and pages should use
. Please help to replace any existing uses on your wiki. There are global-search links available at T287962.
Future changes
- The Wikipedia Library is a place for Wikipedia editors to get access to sources. There is an extension which has a new function to tell users when they can take part in it. It will use notifications. It will start pinging the first users in September. It will ping more users later. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T288070]

Recent changes
- You can add language links in the sidebar in the new Vector skin again. You do this by connecting the page to a Wikidata item. The new Vector skin has moved the language links but the new language selector cannot add language links yet. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T287206]
Problems
- There was a problem on wikis which use the Translate extension. Translations were not updated or were replaced with the English text. The problems have been fixed. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T288700][https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T288683][https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T288719]
Changes later this week
- A revision tag will soon be added to edits that add links to disambiguation pages. This is because these links are usually added by accident. The tag will allow editors to easily find the broken links and fix them. If your wiki does not like this feature, it can be hidden. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T287549]
- Would you like to help improve the information about tools? Would you like to attend or help organize a small virtual meetup for your community to discuss the list of tools? Please get in touch on the Toolhub Quality Signal Sessions talk page. We are also looking for feedback from tool maintainers on some specific questions.
- In the past, edits to any page in your user talk space ignored your mute list, e.g. sub-pages. Starting this week, this is only true for edits to your talk page. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T288112]

Reply-link officially superseded by DiscussionTools
Hi! Reply-link has officially been superseded by mw:DiscussionTools, which you can install using the "Discussion tools" checkbox under {{myprefs|Beta features}}. DiscussionTools, developed by the WMF's Editing Team, is faster and has more features than reply-link, and it wouldn't make sense for me to keep developing reply-link. I think the Editing Team is doing amazing work, and look forward to what they can do in the future. Thank you for using reply-link over the years! Enterprisey (talk!) 06:11, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.

Wikiproject Military history coordinator election nomination period closing soon
Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election are still open, but not for long. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! No further nominations will be accepted after that time. Voting will commence on 15 September. If you have any questions, you can contact any member of the current coord team. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:43, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Growth features are now deployed to almost all Wikipedias. For the majority of small Wikipedias, the features are only available for experienced users, to test the features and configure them. Features will be available for newcomers starting on 20 September 2021.
- MediaWiki had a feature that would highlight local links to short articles in a different style. Each user could pick the size at which "stubs" would be highlighted. This feature was very bad for performance, and following a consultation, has been removed. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T284917]
- A technical change was made to the MonoBook skin to allow for easier maintenance and upkeep. This has resulted in some minor changes to HTML that make MonoBook's HTML consistent with other skins. Efforts have been made to minimize the impact on editors, but please ping Jon (WMF) on wiki or in phabricator if any problems are reported.
Problems
- There was a problem with search last week. Many search requests did not work for 2 hours because of an accidental restart of the search servers. [https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Incident_documentation/2021-09-13_cirrussearch_restart]
Changes later this week

. API users should update their code to avoid unrecognized parameter warnings. Pywikibot users should upgrade to 6.6.0. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T290585]prpiprop
Future changes
- The Reply tool will be deployed to the remaining wikis in the coming weeks. It is currently part of "{{int:discussiontools-preference-label}}" in Beta features at most wikis. You will be able to turn it off in Editing Preferences. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T262331]
- File:Octicons-tools.svg The previously announced change to how you obtain tokens from the API has been delayed to September 21 because of an incompatibility with Pywikibot. Bot operators using Pywikibot can follow T291202 for progress on a fix, and should plan to upgrade to 6.6.1 when it is released.

U.S. military aircraft renaming proposal
Howdy! Since we've been effectively collaborating on the grand reshuffle of U.S. military aircraft lists, I thought I would discuss an idea with you before I formally suggest it. I'd like to move List of military aircraft of the United States (1909–1919) to List of undesignated military aircraft of the United States (pre–1922). In other words, there would be two lists of undesignated aircraft—a modern list and a WWI-era list. Here's my reasoning:
- All of the U.S. armed services have had one designation system or another continuously in effect since 1922. This list focuses on the era when undesignated aircraft were the norm rather than the exception. 1922 is a logical and easily understandable break point.
- The list would not be overlong or scattershot; it would not have both the Curtiss Jenny and Citation Excel on it.
- The source article would not require major surgery. Basically, the 1911 and 1914 U.S. Navy aircraft would be removed, and the lead would be edited—done!
Thoughts, feelings, opinions? Carguychris (talk) 13:01, 22 September 2021 (UTC)
:{{u|Carguychris}} I was actually thinking the same thing, but one question I have is whether there are enough post-1922 undesignated aircraft to merit a list separate from the pre-1922 list. To my knowledge, most undesignated aircraft used by the US post-1922 were never officially acquired, being loans instead. - ZLEA T\C 14:18, 22 September 2021 (UTC)
::{{u|ZLEA}} On second thought, I think I'll keep it simple and propose List of undesignated military aircraft of the United States, and we'll consider splitting it later. Carguychris (talk) 15:09, 22 September 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- iOS 15 has a new function called [https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212614 Private Relay] (Apple website). This can hide the user's IP when they use Safari browser. This is like using a VPN in that we see another IP address instead. It is opt-in and only for those who pay extra for iCloud. It will come to Safari users on OSX later. There is a technical discussion about what this means for the Wikimedia wikis.
Problems
- File:Octicons-tools.svg Some gadgets and user-scripts add items to the portlets (article tools) part of the skin. A recent change to the HTML may have made those links a different font-size. This can be fixed by adding the CSS class
.vector-menu-dropdown-noicon
. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T291438]

- The GettingStarted extension was built in 2013, and provides an onboarding process for new account holders in a few versions of Wikipedia. However, the recently developed Growth features provide a better onboarding experience. Since the vast majority of Wikipedias now have access to the Growth features, GettingStarted will be deactivated starting on 4 October. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T235752]
- A small number of users will not be able to connect to the Wikimedia wikis after 30 September. This is because an old root certificate will no longer work. They will also have problems with many other websites. Users who have updated their software in the last five years are unlikely to have problems. Users in Europe, Africa and Asia are less likely to have immediate problems even if their software is too old. You can read more.
- You can receive notifications when someone leaves a comment on user talk page or mentions you in a talk page comment. Clicking the notification link will now bring you to the comment and highlight it. Previously, doing so brought you to the top of the section that contained the comment. You can find more information in T282029.
Future changes
- The Reply tool will be deployed to the remaining wikis in the coming weeks. It is currently part of "{{int:discussiontools-preference-label}}" in Beta features at most wikis. You will be able to turn it off in Editing Preferences. See the list of wikis. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T262331]

Reorganization of List of undesignated military aircraft of the United States
Howdy! I'm in the process of fleshing out the List of undesignated military aircraft of the United States, and to cut down on the repetition, I'm toying with a presentation similar to the designated aircraft lists, i.e. mission, then manufacturer, then aircraft type. I think this presentation will make the list easier to follow, but it's also going to make it substantially longer, so I'd like your input. A dummy version of the "World War I to World War II" section can be viewed in my sandbox. Carguychris (talk) 17:09, 13 October 2021 (UTC)
:{{u|Carguychris}} I like the look of it, but one problem I have with separating the list by eras such as "World War I to World War II" is that such eras are not good cutoff points for many branches of the US military. A better way to separate the list (in my opinion) would be by the branches themselves:
:*Army (aircraft operated by the Army and Signal Corps but not by the USAAS/AAC/AAF)
:*Air Force (including the USAAS/AAC/AAF)
:*Navy
:*Marine Corps
:*Coast Guard (the USCG is still military even if it is non-combat)
:*Space Force (not sure if the USSF uses its own aircraft or borrows from other branches)
:Another thing to consider is that since the undesignated aircraft do not follow any numeric sequence, perhaps we should consider something like the tables of List of aircraft of the Royal Air Force. I'm thinking that this would be more convenient if we want to list the aircraft by entry into service date. - ZLEA T\C 17:47, 13 October 2021 (UTC)
::I actually really like the idea of emulating the RAF list because it conveys a lot of information neatly and it's sortable. I hadn't thought of that, thanks! Also, I was already considering eliminating the eras for the exact reasons you suggest, but I'm trying to first formulate a solid plan for reorganizing the list so I don't have to do major surgery twice. Carguychris (talk) 17:58, 13 October 2021 (UTC)
:::I'm going to start an example table in my sandbox. - ZLEA T\C 17:59, 13 October 2021 (UTC)
::::Comments on the proposed breakdown of the service branches: my brief research suggests that the U.S. Coast Guard has only ever operated a small handful of undesignated aircraft, most of which were borrowed directly from the Navy. A brief USCG list like the ones at the bottom of the RAF list article would probably suffice, rather than a full-blown table. Also, USMC aviation has always operated in practice as a branch of naval aviation, so it's often impractical to disentangle USN aircraft from USMC aircraft, and many reference sources don't even try to do so. They may need to go in the same table. Carguychris (talk) 20:52, 13 October 2021 (UTC)
:::::{{u|Carguychris}} I've started the tables in my sandbox. Feel free to add to them or copy them to your own sandbox. - ZLEA T\C 00:45, 14 October 2021 (UTC)
::::::I like it! However, I like how the RAF table has a brief aircraft description under "Notes" and blank spaces for unknown dates rather than question marks, so I think I'll make those changes. I'll copy those tables to my sandbox and start building a similar USN/USMC table. Carguychris (talk) 17:00, 14 October 2021 (UTC)

- Christmas is here again, time to bug people to get you the stuff you really, really want! (Anyone going to get me some butter cookies, or that giant Costco teddy bear?)
- If you don't like turkey, there's always the rotisserie chicken!
- If you ate too much turkey and regret it, then you should have read the above message ;)
=Wikipedia News =
:We don't have much to report this month, but we do have the following...
- The Simple English Wikipedia has almost reached 200,000 articles!
- Wikipedia Asian Month which took place in November, has finished. Now, all the articles are judged and then it is determined who gets the postcards, even if you don't get one, or didn't participate, there is always next year, and we thank you for everything you have done!
- Arbitration Committee Elections December 2021 took place earlier this month, for elegible editors. (At the time of this writing it was still taking place, but I assumed by the time this issue was sent, it would have been finished - It is set to finish at December 6 2021 at 23:59 UTC )
===Editor's Notes===
- I haven't forgotten about TWW ;) Don't worry.
- TWW is in the process of getting a new main page, if you have any ideas, or would like to help, please shoot a message on the TWW talk page.
- That's it for this issue! This is the last issue for 2021. See you all in 2022! Have a safe and happy holiday season!

Welcome to the eighth issue of the English Wikipedia's Bots Newsletter, your source for all things bot. Maintainers disappeared to parts unknown... bots awakening from the slumber of æons... hundreds of thousands of short descriptions... these stories, and more, are brought to you by Wikipedia's most distinguished newsletter about bots.
Our last issue was in August 2019, so there's quite a bit of catching up to do. Due to the vast quantity of things that have happened, the next few issues will only cover a few months at a time. This month, we'll go from September 2019 through the end of the year. I won't bore you with further introductions — instead, I'll bore you with a newsletter about bots.
Overall
- Between September and December 2019, there were 33 BRFAs. Of these, {{yeac}} 25 were approved, and 8 were unsuccessful ({{nayd}} 3 denied, {{idkc}} 3 withdrawn, and File:Image-Symbol wait old.svg 2 expired).
September 2019
File:Frankenstein1931CliveKarloff (cropped).jpg
- {{yeac}} Monkbot 16, DannyS712 bot 60, Ahechtbot 6, PearBOT 3, Qbugbot 3 · {{nayd}} DannyS712 bot 5, PkbwcgsBot 24 · {{idkc}} DannyS712 bot 61, TheSandBot 4
- TParis goes away, UTRSBot goes kaput: Beeblebrox noted that the bot for maintaining on-wiki records of UTRS appeals stopped working a while ago. TParis, the semi-retired user who had previously run it, said they were "unlikely to return to actively editing Wikipedia", and the bot had been vanquished by trolls submitting bogus UTRS requests on behalf of real blocked users. While OAuth was a potential fix, neither maintainer had time to implement it. TParis offered to access to the UTRS WMFLabs account to any admin identified with the WMF: "I miss you guys a whole lot [...] but I've also moved on with my life. Good luck, let me know how I can help". Ultimately, SQL ended up in charge. Some progress was made, and the bot continued to work another couple months — but as of press time, UTRSBot has not edited since November 2019.
- Article-measuring contest resumed: The list of Wikipedians by article count, which had lain dead for several years, was triumphantly resurrected by GreenC following a bot request.
October 2019
- {{yeac}} OAbot 3, DannyS712 bot 47, Pathbot 2, PearBOT 2, DannyS712 bot 59, DannyS712 bot 62, HasteurBot 14, PearBOT 4, WOSlinkerBot 4, MilHistBot 5
- Curb Safe Charmer adopts reFill: TAnthony pointed out that reFill 2's bug reports were going unanswered; creator Zhaofeng Li had retired from Wikipedia, and a maintainer was needed. As of June 2021, Curb Safe Charmer had taken up the mantle, saying: "Not that I have all the skills needed but better me than nobody! 'Maintainer' might be too strong a term though. Volunteers welcome!"
November 2019
File:Wormhole travel as envisioned by Les Bossinas for NASA.jpg
- {{yeac}} BHGbot 4, YiFeiBot 2, DannyS712 bot III 64 · {{idkc}} PearBOT
- Old bots do new tricks: DannyS712 bot III 64 prowled redirects, YiFeiBot 2 archived GoCE requests, and BHGbot 4 removed links to portals deleted at MfD (until its authorization was revoked in January at operator BrownHairedGirl's request).
December 2019
- {{yeac}} DemonDays64 Bot, DannyS712 bot III 66, Bot1058 6, Monkbot 15, MilHistBot 6, PearBOT 5, DannyS712 bot IV 65 · {{nayd}} SportsStatsBot ·File:Image-Symbol wait old.svg Xinbenlv bot, SteveBot 8
- Redirects to be autopatrolled: A RfC took place at WP:NPP, closing with unanimous consensus that new redirects should be automatically marked as patrolled by bot. DannyS712 wasted no time, and submitted DannyS712 bot III 66 the next day; it passed two days after that.
- 200,000 bios get short descs: Along a similar vein, Bot1058 6 was approved to remove disambiguation pages from :Category:Monitored short pages and a new bot (DemonDays64 Bot) changed lots of http links to https using JavaScript Wiki Browser. One particularly neat task, PearBOT 5, automatically generated short descriptions for more than 200,000 biographies.
In the next issue of Bots Newsletter:
What's next for our intrepid band of coders, maintainers and approvers?
- What happens when two bots want to clerk the same page?
- What happens when an adminbot goes hog wild?
- Will reFill ever get fixed?
- What's up with ListeriaBot, anyway?
- Python 3.4 deprecation? In my PyWikiBot? (It's more likely than you think!)
These questions will be answered — and new questions raised — by the January 2022 Bots Newsletter. Tune in, or miss out!
Signing off... jp×g 04:29, 10 December 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- There are now default short aliases for the "Project:" namespace on most wikis. E.g. On Wikibooks wikis,
will go to the local language default for theWB:
namespace. This change is intended to help the smaller communities have easy access to this feature. Additional local aliases can still be requested via the usual process. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T293839]Project:
Changes later this week
- File:Octicons-sync.svg The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from {{#time:j xg|2021-12-14|en}}. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from {{#time:j xg|2021-12-15|en}}. It will be on all wikis from {{#time:j xg|2021-12-16|en}} (calendar).

HESA Saeqeh
hellow. the word "saeqeh" is 100% arabic meaning thunderbolt. Azarakhsh is the persian word for thunderbolt.Sikorsky Cyclone (talk) 10:18, 20 December 2021 (UTC)
:{{u|Sikorsky Cyclone}} When I pop صاعقه into Google Translate, it automatically detects it as Persian for "lightning". If you read the Arabic script article, you will notice that the first sentence states that the script is used not only used for Arabic, but many other languages as well (the first listed being Persian). Now I ask you, do you read Arabic script? Can you be 100% certain that the script is not meant to be Persian? - ZLEA T\C 15:16, 20 December 2021 (UTC)

Tech News
- Because of the holidays the next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 10 January 2022.
Recent changes
- Queries made by the DynamicPageList extension (
) are now only allowed to run for 10 seconds and error if they take longer. This is in response to multiple outages where long-running queries caused an outage on all wikis. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T287380#7575719]
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week or next week.
Future changes
- The developers of the Wikipedia iOS app are looking for testers who edit in multiple languages. You can read more and let them know if you are interested.
- File:Octicons-tools.svg The Wikimedia Cloud VPS hosts technical projects for the Wikimedia movement. Developers need to claim projects they use. This is because old and unused projects are removed once a year. Unclaimed projects can be shut down from February. - WatchlistAFD automatically watchlists the AFDs of any pages you AFC accept or NPP patrol, to help you calibrate your reviewing.

- generate pings generates the wikitext needed to ping all members of a category, up to 50 editors (the limit defined by MediaWiki).
- share ExpandTemplates url allows for easy sharing of your inputs to Special:ExpandTemplates. It adds a button that, when clicked, copies a shareable URL to your exact invocation of the page, [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:ExpandTemplates?wpContextTitle=John+Doe+%28Wikipedia+editor%29&wpInput=%7B%7B%23invoke%3AExample%7Chello%7D%7D&wpRemoveComments=1&wpRemoveNowiki=0&wpGenerateXml=1&wpGenerateRawHtml=0 like this]. - Tol:
- VisualEditor Citation Needed adds a button (under "Insert") in VisualEditor to add a {{tl|citation needed}} tag.
- Venkat TL:
- ColourContrib color-codes the user contributions page so that pages you've edited last are sharply distinguished from pages where another editor was the last to edit the page.
- Vukky:
- StatusChanger is a fork of Enterprisey's Status Changer, which adds a UI to the script. (using Morebits, so you'll need to have Twinkle enabled to use it).
All in all, some very neat scripts were written in these last few months. Hoping to see many more in the next issue -- drop us a line on the talk page if you've been writing (or seeing) anything cool and good. Filling in for DannyS712, this has been jp×g.
