Background

The No Kings protests were aimed at opposing the policies and actions of the Donald Trump administration. Due to the parade coinciding with President Trump's 79th birthday, anti-Trump activists have interpreted the event as an example of Trump using the US Armed Forces to conduct an authoritarian or king-like celebration of himself. The protests followed several days of demonstrations against ICE raids across the US,{{efn|According to The Guardian, "[i]nterest in the events has risen since Trump sent national guard and US Marine Corps troops to Los Angeles to tamp down mostly peaceful protests against ramped-up deportations".{{cite web|url=https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jun/13/no-kings-protests|title=Millions in US expected to protest against Trump in 'No Kings' demonstrations|work=The Guardian|date=June 13, 2025|access-date=June 13, 2025}}}} including in Los Angeles, where Trump deployed both the California National Guard and the US Marine Corps.{{Cite web |date=June 12, 2025 |title=What to know about 'No Kings' protests against Trump's policies on Saturday |url=https://apnews.com/article/no-kings-protest-things-to-know-trump-8d37f2bb2bf20ab503205b277e92b885 |access-date=June 12, 2025 |website=AP News |language=en}}{{Cite web |date=June 12, 2025 |title=What to expect at Trump's military parade and 'No Kings' protests |url=https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c9dqz4jdzy2o |access-date=June 12, 2025 |website=BBC News |language=en-GB}} The American Federation of Teachers and Communications Workers of America, organized the protests.{{cite web | last=Archie | first=Ayana | title='No Kings' protests against Trump planned nationwide to coincide with military parade | publisher=NPR | date=June 14, 2025 | url=https://www.npr.org/2025/06/14/nx-s1-5432708/no-kings-protests-military-parade | access-date=June 14, 2025}}{{Cite web |last=Ewing |first=Giselle Ruhiyyih |date=2025-06-14 |title=The Resistance 2.0 arrives with nationwide 'No Kings' protests |url=https://www.politico.com/news/2025/06/14/no-kings-protest-trump-00406243 |access-date=2025-06-14 |website=Politico |language=en}} The No Kings theme was created by the 50501 movement, and derives its name from the perceived authoritarian or tyrannical behavior of Trump and his administration. Critics and activists have compared Trump to an absolute monarch due to his defiance of court orders, extralegal deportations, and perceived disregard for civil rights. Democrats Abroad organized solidarity protests internationally with the term of "No Tyrants",{{Cite web |title=Join a No Tyrants Protest Near You |url=https://www.democratsabroad.org/join_a_no_tyrants_protest_near_you |access-date=June 13, 2025 |website=Democrats Abroad |language=en}} as many countries have monarchs as heads of state. Its message was, "We reject authoritarianism. We reject fear. We reject tyrants."

Trump publicly opposed the demonstrations and stated that protestors interfering with the parade itself would be "met with heavy force".{{Cite news |last1=Green |first1=Erica L. |last2=Haberman |first2=Maggie |date=June 10, 2025 |title=Trump Says Protesters at Military Parade Will Be Met With 'Very Big Force' |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/10/us/politics/trump-military-parade-protests.html |access-date=June 12, 2025 |work=The New York Times |language=en-US |issn=0362-4331}}{{Cite web |last=Dec |first=Stacey |title=Trump warns 'any' protesters at military parade will be 'met with heavy force' |url=https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/trump-warns-protesters-military-parade-met-heavy-force/story?id=122692921 |access-date=June 12, 2025 |website=ABC News |language=en}}{{Cite web |last1=Goodman |first1=Amy |author-link1=Amy Goodman |last2=Shaikh |first2=Nermeen |date=June 11, 2025 |title="No Kings": 1,800+ Rallies Planned as Trump Threatens "Very Heavy Force" on Army Parade Protesters |url=https://www.democracynow.org/2025/6/11/no_kings |access-date=June 13, 2025 |website=Democracy Now! |language=en}}
