{{Rquote|right|There is every sign that Canadians are not just apathetic in the face of this abuse; most of them support it. Sometimes it seems that democracy isn't even skin-deep in this country. It vanishes at the first challenge. By sheer good luck, the challenges have never been severe enough to create major changes in our institutions, nor damage our smugness. That sense of confidence is poorly deserved and, like all illusions, more dangerous to our survival as a free country than any of the external challenges we might face.|

The 2010 WikiCup begins tomorrow!
Welcome to the biggest WikiCup Wikipedia has yet seen! Round one will take place over two months, and finish on February 26. There is only one pool, and the top 64 will progress. The competition will be tough, as more than half of the current competitors will not make it to round 2. Details about scoring have been finalized and are explained at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. Please make sure you're familiar with the scoring rules, because any submissions made that violate these rules will be removed. Like always, the judges can be reached through the WikiCup talk pages, on their talk page, or over IRC with any issues concerning anything tied to the Cup. We will keep in contact with you via weekly newsletters; if you do not want to receive them, please remove yourself from the list here. Conversely, if a non-WikiCup participant wishes to receive the newsletters, they may add themselves to that list. Well, enough talk- get writing! Your submission's page is located here. Details on how to submit your content is located here, so be sure to check that out! Once content has been recognized, it can be added to your submissions page, from which our bot will update the main score table. Remember that only articles worked on and nominated during the competition are eligible for points. Have fun, and good luck! Garden, iMatthew, J Milburn, and The ed17 19:23, 31 December 2009 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for File:Alleged Khadr 3.png
Thanks for uploading or contributing to :File:Alleged Khadr 3.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stifle (talk) 12:18, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

DYK nomination
I reviewed T:TDYK#Mohammed Loay Bayazid at DYK and have some comments there. I realize that I may have come over as excessively critical in reviewing a few of your DYK nominations recently, but as they are BLPs about very sensitive subjects I think vigilance is a necessity there. Keep up the good work and I hope we'll be able to run more (alleged?) al-Qaedaists on DYK. Ucucha 22:33, 24 January 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 January newsletter
We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. We've had some shakeups regarding late entries, flag changes and early dropouts, but the competition is now established- there will be no more flag changes or new competitors. Congratulations to , our current leader, who, at the time of writing, has more listed points than and (second and third place respectively) combined. A special well done also goes to - his artcle Jewel Box (St. Louis, Missouri) was the first content to score points in the competition.
Around half of competitors are yet to score. Please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. 64 of the 149 current competitors will advance to round 2- if you currently have no points, do not worry, as over half of the current top 64 have under 50 points. Everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places in round 2! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, by email or on IRC. Good luck! Speedy deletion nomination of :File:Yelizaveta mironova.jpg
Image:Ambox warning_pn.svg A tag has been placed on :File:Yelizaveta mironova.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image licensed as "for non-commercial use only," "non-derivative use" or "used with permission," it has not been shown to comply with the limited standards for the use of non-free content. , and it was either uploaded on or after 2005-05-19, or is not used in any articles. If you agree with the deletion, there is no need to do anything. If, however, you believe that this image may be retained on Wikipedia under one of the permitted conditions then:
- state clearly the source of the image. If it has been copied from elsewhere on the web you should provide links to: the image itself, the page which uses it and the page which contains the license conditions.
- add the relevant copyright tag.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding hangon
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Replaceable fair use File:LarryColburn2.jpg
Thanks for uploading :File:LarryColburn2.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the media description page and edit it to add di-replaceable fair use disputed, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
- On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast (talk) 10:55, 13 February 2010 (UTC)
Proposed deletion of Eutímio Guerra
Image:Ambox warning yellow.svg
The article Eutímio Guerra has been proposed for deletion. The proposed-deletion notice added to the article should explain why.
While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the dated prod
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing dated prod
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
- Since you created the article 4 years ago, I wanted to let you know about the recent proposal. I have added a paragraph of the incident to the relevant article (Che Guevara) and thus deem this one unnecessary and failing general WP:Notability guidelines. However, I am open to counter arguments. Redthoreau -- (talk) 23:44, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

I'm confused
As to your recent edits, erasing (though I had reflected them) any semblance of this major part of the Ahmed Ressam story -- why would you delete the fact that this month a US court of Appeals rule he "must be resentenced because his 22-year prison term was too short"? My most edit had fixed the failure of the article to properly reflect that, and now you've deleted mention of it. --Epeefleche (talk) 06:20, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
:Tx. You may want to work in mention of AQ ... see for example this and this--Epeefleche (talk) 06:31, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
::And here are some good source docs ... the article is mighty thin on the facts ... his indictment, press release on his conviction on all counts, the recent opinion by the court of appeals, and DOJ's release on the decision. Cheers.--Epeefleche (talk) 06:37, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
:::Also, I think that that info most certainly belongs in the intro, as 1) the intro is small and can handle another sentence, and 2) this qualifies the information in the intro -- and the reader should be able to walk away from the intro w/a sense as to the current state of play (not the case as the intro now stands).--Epeefleche (talk) 06:39, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
Happy to work w/you on it. Agree the article needs a lot of work. Sorry that we have to start with a second disagreement. The intro should not indicate as it does what his sentence is without informing the reader that it is being extended. I don't think that many would disagree with that, and am happy for us to take it to the appropriate noticeboard if you like. It's a pretty basic issue. You already have recognized that his sentence is lead-notable. The fact that the number that you put in is not the real number is a no-no that I believe must be corrected by reference to the fact that it is being reviewed for extension (not those words, but more artful ones). And it doesn't matter that this happened after 10 years ... the wheels of justice are slow, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't correct the misimpression that the lede leaves one with. There is language in the DOJ release at his conviction, btw, as to what they thought the case was a "first" for. As to the other things you want to put in the lede, their fine as well -- ledes can be as long as four paras. What we have here is a stub (and misleading) lede, and a stub article. IMHO, of course.--Epeefleche (talk) 06:52, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
May 2004 warnings
I would have to look at each article (which I'm not likely to do), but your add may not be that relevant to some of them. The warnings do more than one thing, along with the press conference relating to them. They ID'd the seven most sought AQ. The press conference spoke of the imminence of threats. Where the second point is the issue, your addition makes good sense. Where not, not so much imho (slightly off-topic Dem/Rep typical spatting about imminence of threat where that is not the issue in the article). Best.

Finnish Girl
You might like this. Out of curiosity I did some Wiki-ing on the jpg file name. I don't speak a word of Finnish so I might be way off here:
: Seitajärvellä 7. heinäkuuta 1944 partisaanit ottivat taloista ruokaa ja pyyheliinoja
: 7 July 1944, Seitajärvellä Partisans deprived of shelter, food and proper clothing
::Seitajärvellä, also Seitajärven - ? a Finnish ethnic group ?
::heinäkuu - July
::partisaani - partisan
::ottivat - to deprive, bereave; take
::taloista - houses, buildings
::ruokaa - food; meal
::ja - and
::pyyheliina - towel; towelling, terry cloth ?
Significance of 7 July 1944:
: 7. heinäkuuta – Neuvostoliittolaiset partisaanit tuhosivat Seitajärven kylän Savukoskella ja tappoivat 14 kylän asukasta.
: 7 July - Soviet partisans devastate Seitajärven villages in Savukoskella and murder 14 inhabitants.
::Neuvostoliittolaiset - Soviet
::tuhota - damage, destroy, devastate ; tuhopolttaja - arsonist ; tuhopoltto - arson
::Seitajärven - ? an ethnic group ?
::kylä - village
::Savukoski - area in eastern Lappland
::tappo - manslaughter
::asukas - inhabitant, dweller
There were two wars between Finland and Soviet Union. Winter War and Continuation War so 1944 would put the image in the Continuation War. What a brave little country. It's interesting they only declassified it in 2006.
She was a probably rape victim as you suggest, the cloths and the notation for July 7 seem to indicate that. The jpg name seems to imply she's a Finnish partisan maybe killed in action. Confusing. A terrible loss of a precious life but the photo doesn't really humiliate her that I can tell. A good lithmus test, If it was me, maybe I wouldn't mind if people saw me like that. It might be a good image to use, though it might be an emotional thing for some Finns.
The baby image is disturbing but if you don't mind readers losing their cookies then go for it. I personally think that would be wrong but whatever. The Ripper picture - nice. Slightsmile (talk) 22:12, 5 March 2010 (UTC)Slightsmile
As I look at it some more, I think that:
:Seitajärvellä 7. heinäkuuta 1944 partisaanit ottivat taloista ruokaa ja pyyheliinoja
probably should read:
:Seitajärvellä 7 July 1944 Partisans deprived of shelter, food and proper clothing
So maybe she's a Russian partisan? Slightsmile (talk) 23:46, 5 March 2010 (UTC)Slightsmile

Orphaned non-free image File:JTF2 - Logo.png
Image:Ambox warning blue.svg Thanks for uploading :File:JTF2 - Logo.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Fred the Oyster (talk) 10:09, 15 March 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 March newsletter
We're half way through round two, and everything is running smoothly. leads overall with 650 points this round, and heads pool B. currently leads pool C, dubbed the "Group of Death", which has a only a single contestant yet to score this round (the fewest of any group), as well five contestants over 100 points (the most). With a month still to go, as well as 16 wildcard places, everything is still to play for. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.
Although unrelated to the WikiCup, April sees a Good Article Nominations backlog elimination drive, formulated as a friendly competition with small awards, as the Cup is. Several WikiCup contestants and judges have already signed up, but regular reviewers and those who hope to do more reviewing are more than welcome to join at the drive page. If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. J Milburn, Fox, iMatthew and The ed17

WikiCup 2010 April newsletter
Round two is over, and we are down to our final 32. For anyone interested in the final standings (though not arranged by group) this page has been compiled. Congratulations to , our clear overall round winner, and to and , who were solidly second and third respectively. There were a good number of high scorers this round- competition was certainly tough! Round three begins tomorrow, but anything promoted after the end of round two is eligible for points. 16 contestants (eight pool leaders and eight wildcards) will progress to round four in two months- things are really starting to get competitive.
Judge iMatthew has retired from Wikipedia, and we wish him the best. The competition has been ticking over well with minimal need for judge intervention, so thank you to everyone making that possible. A special thank you goes to participants and for their help in preparing for round three. Good luck everyone! File source problem with File:CommissionReportOnTravel.jpg
Thank you for uploading :File:CommissionReportOnTravel.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. File permission problem with File:Voss-called-to-identify.jpg
Thanks for uploading :File:Voss-called-to-identify.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.
If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as non-free fair use in or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in [ your upload log]. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:2004 RCMP Briefing Note regarding Abdullah Khadr.PNG
Thank you for uploading :File:2004 RCMP Briefing Note regarding Abdullah Khadr.PNG. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.
If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. FASTILYsock(TALK) 18:45, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

File source problem with File:ShawnGibson.jpg
Thank you for uploading :File:ShawnGibson.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.
If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have created [ in your upload log]. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 19:11, 7 May 2010 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. File permission problem with File:SamYbarra.jpg
Thanks for uploading :File:SamYbarra.jpg.
Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Your File Uploads
Considering that a number of non-free files you uploaded have perfect fair use rationales, which you yourself added, I am inclined to believe that you know exactly what constitutes a valid fair-use rationale, but are simply electing not to add that information for whatever reason you may have. At any rate, this is extremely disruptive. Consider yourself warned. If you upload another file lacking sufficient fair-use rationale OR remove a deletion tag from a file you have uploaded without first providing sufficient fair-use rationale, source information, ect., I will not hesitate to block you from editing. -FASTILYsock(TALK) 19:24, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

:::":Fastily -- you're way out of line. Completely. Please live up to your sysop responsibilities. I never mind anyone asking me if there has been off-wiki conversation w/me on a subject. You didn't do that. Instead, you directed a snarky, non-AGF, lie at me. How many wp:admin violations is that in one? Nobody -- not Sheru, nor anyone else -- directed me to this. So I'm expecting to see an immediate corrective comments or redaction. That's totally uncalled for, and on top of your first issue with tone above, suggests that you might want to reconsider what you've typed before you hit send in the future. Billing gave you excellent advice. You would do well to heed it. We just lost an effective sysop this week because he couldn't hold his tongue. You can do excellent work; you just would do better work if you followed wp:civil and wp:agf.--Epeefleche (talk) 06:30, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 May newsletter
We are half way through round 3, with a little under a month to go. The current overall leader is , who has 570 points. He leads pool C. Pools A, B and D are led by , and respectively.
Two of last year's final 8, and , have dropped out of the competition, saying they would rather their place went to someone who will have more time on their hands than them next round. On a related note, a special thank you goes to for his help behind the scenes once again. There is currently a problem with the poster, perhaps caused by the new skin- take a look at this discussion and see if you can help. The competition has continued to tick over well with minimal need for judge intervention, so thank you to everyone making that possible. Good luck to all! Fair use rationale for File:FrankRoque.jpg
Thanks for uploading or contributing to :File:FrankRoque.jpg.
Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. VernoWhitney (talk) 16:12, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
You are now a Reviewer
File:Redaktor Wikipedia 600px.png
Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).
Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.
When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.
If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 21:13, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 June newsletter
We're half way through 2010, and the end of the WikiCup is in sight! Round 3 is over, and we're down to our final 16. Our pool winners were (A), (B, and the round's overall leader), (C) and (D, joint), but, with the scores reset, everything is to play for in our last pooled round. The pools will be up before midnight tonight, and have been selected randomly by J Milburn. This will be the toughest round yet, and so, as ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.
Though unaffiliated with the WikiCup, July sees the third Great Wikipedia Dramaout- a project with not dissimilar goals to the WikiCup. Everyone is welcome to take part and do their bit to contribute to the encyclopedia itself.
If you're interested in the scores for the last round of the Cup, please take a look at Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/Round 3 and Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/Full/Round 3. Our thanks go to for compiling these. As was predicted, Group C ended up the "Group of Death", with 670 points required for second place, and, therefore, automatic promotion. This round will probably be even tougher- again, the top two from each of the two groups will make it through, while the twelve remaining participants will compete for four wildcard places- good luck everyone! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. J Milburn, Fox and The ed17

WikiCup 2010 July newsletter
We are half-way through our penultimate round, and nothing is yet certain. Pool A, currently led by has ended up the more competitive, with three contestants (, and ) scoring over 500 points already. Pool B is led by , who has also scored well over 500. The top two from each pool, as well as the next four highest scorers regardless of pool, will make it through to our final eight. As ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.
Planning has begun for the 2011 WikiCup, with open discussions concerning scoring and flags for next year's competition. Contributions to those discussions would be appreciated, especially concerning the flags, as next year's signups cannot begin until the flag issue has been resolved. Signups will hopefully open at some point in this round, with discussion about possible changing in the scoring/process opening some time afterwards.
Earlier this round, we said goodbye to , who has bowed out to spend more time on the book he is authoring with his wife. We wish him all the best. In other news, the start of this round also saw some WikiCup awards sent out by . We appreciate his enthusiasm, and contestants are of course welcome to award each other prizes as they see fit, but rest assured that we will be sending out "official" awards at the end of the competition. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:FritzKnoechlein.jpg
Thank you for uploading :File:FritzKnoechlein.jpg.
Thank you. J Milburn (talk) 16:40, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

We also say goodbye to , who withdrew earlier this month after spending six weeks overseas. Anyone interested in this round's results can see them here and here. Thank you to for these.
Signups for next year's competition are now open. Planning is ongoing, with a key discussion about judges for next year open.
