A raion ({{langx|uk|район|raion}}; {{plural form|{{langx|uk|райони|raiony|label=none}}}}), often translated as district, is the second-level administrative division in Ukraine. Raions were created in a 1922 administrative reform of the Soviet Union, to which Ukraine, as the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, belonged.{{cite book |last= Liber|first= George O.|date= 2016|title= Total Wars and the Making of Modern Ukraine, 1914-1954 |url= https://books.google.com/books?id=yNgQDAAAQBAJ&q=%22Raions%22+Ukraine+%221923%22&pg=PR19 |publisher= University of Toronto Press|page= ix/xx|isbn= 9781442627086}}{{#tag:ref|Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union from 1922 until declaring its independence in 1991.Magocsi, Paul Robert (2010). On 17 July 2020, the Verkhovna Rada (Ukraine's parliament) approved an administrative reform to merge most of the 490 raions, along with the "cities of regional significance", which were previously outside the raions, into just 136 reformed raions.{{cite news |title=Україна з новим адмінтерустроєм: парламент створив 136 нових районів та ліквідував 490 старих |url= https://decentralization.gov.ua/news/12634|work=Decentralization Reform |date=17 July 2020|language=uk}}

Some cities of oblast significance, along with the two cities of national significance (Kyiv and Sevastopol{{#tag:ref|Sevastopol, a city with special status under Ukrainian law, was annexed by Russia in 2014.|group=nb}}), are also divided in city raions, also called urban raions. City raions have their own local administration and are subordinated directly to a city. They may contain other cities, towns, and villages.
July 2020 reform
On 17 July 2020, the number of raions in Ukraine was reduced to 136 (incl. 10 in Crimea) from the previous 490.{{Cite web |last=Автор |title=Те, чого ніколи не було в Україні: Уряд затвердив адмінтерустрій базового рівня, що забезпечить повсюдність місцевого самоврядування |url=https://decentralization.gov.ua/admin/articles/12533.html |access-date=2023-06-18 |website=decentralization.gov.ua}}
