List of North American Numbering Plan area codes#Canada

{{Short description|None}}

The North American Numbering Plan (NANP) divides the territories of its members into geographic numbering plan areas (NPAs). Each NPA is identified by one or more numbering plan area codes (NPA codes, or area codes), consisting of three digits that are prefixed to each local telephone number having seven digits. A numbering plan area with multiple area codes is called an overlay. Area codes are also assigned for non-geographic purposes. The rules for numbering NPAs do not permit the digits 0 and 1 in the leading position.AT&T (1955) Notes on Distance Dialing Area codes with two identical trailing digits are easily recognizable codes (ERC). NPAs with 9 in the second position are reserved for future format expansion.

Area codes in numerical order

Area codes that are not in use are listed in italic type face; and unassignable codes are bolded. The column Date lists either the date or year of assignment before implementation, or the in-service date.

  • Conflicts with the original use of exchange number 950, which was originally used to access competing interexchange carriers. A subscriber would call 950-XXXX to reach a specific carrier, then dial the long-distance destination number. This feature group 'B' has been rendered obsolete by 1010xxx "dial-around" feature group 'D', but the exchange remains reserved in each individual area code.

Assignment actions by year

class="wikitable"

! YearThe table entries for each year list area code either by the time of assignment or, preferably where available, the in-service date. In-service dates are often difficult to ascertain for the early codes before they gained public recognition with gradual implementation of Direct Distance Dialing in the 1950 and 1960s. Starting with the late 1980s, assignment and in-service data was published timely in Planning Letters by the NANPA, fully accessible on their website.

! Area codes

! Total
assigned or
in serviceThe number of assigned and in-service NPAs differs, and is even uncertain before the start of the digital records by the NANPA in the 1990s.
