The Geneva International Motor Show was an annual auto show held in March in the Swiss city of Geneva.
The show was hosted at the Palexpo, a convention centre located next to the Geneva Cointrin International Airport. The Salon was organised by the Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d'Automobiles, and was considered an important major international auto show.{{cite web|url=http://www.genevamotorshow2010.com |title=Geneva Motor Show 2010 |publisher=Geneva Motor Show 2010 |access-date=24 January 2011 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110128120050/http://www.genevamotorshow2010.com/ |archive-date=28 January 2011}}
First held in 1905, the Salon hosted almost all major internal combustion engined models in the history of the automobile, along with benzene- and steam-powered cars from the beginning of the century. Exotic supercars often steal the spotlight during their debuts at the show. Prototypes, new equipment, technical breakthroughs, international partnerships, as well as political and social debates, have been announced at the exhibition. The show was regarded as a level playing field for the world's automakers, aided by the fact Switzerland lacked an auto industry of its own.{{cite web|author=Frank Jordans|title=Small is beautiful at the Geneva International Motor Show|work=Los Angeles Times|url=https://www.latimes.com/classified/automotive/highway1/la-hy-genevaoverview-story,0,7479684.story|date=6 March 2008}}
The Geneva International Motor Show was not held in 2020–2023 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic impact on the global automobile industry. The event returned in 2024.
In May 2024 the Geneva Show organizing committee decided to cancel the event for 2025 and beyond, citing a general lack of interest by manufacturers and competition from other shows. It shifted its focus to the show scheduled for November 2025 in Qatar.{{cite news |title=Shifting Gears: Geneva Salon Discontinued, GIMS Qatar to Lead Future Endeavors |work=Geneva International Motor Show |url=https://genevamotorshow.com/shifting-gears-geneva-salon-discontinued-gims-qatar-to-lead-future-endeavors/ |date=2024-05-31 |access-date=2024-05-31}}

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic along with "uncertainties in the global economy and geopolitics" in 2022 led the organisers to cancel the Swiss location for 2023 (fourth year in row) and to postpone the Qatari location until October 2023. Another contributing factor was less commitments from the manufacturers for the Swiss location.{{cite web|url=https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1135493_2023-geneva-international-motor-show-skips-switzerland-for-qatar |title=

In 2021, the Geneva International Motor Show organisers entered into an agreement with Qatari government to hold the biennal exhibitions in Qatar during the fourth quarter along with the annual exhibitions in the Switzerland during the first quarter.{{cite web|url=https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1133355_organizers-of-geneva-auto-show-plan-to-share-show-with-qatar |title=Organizers of Geneva auto show plan to share show with Qatar |first=Viknesh |last=Vijayenthiran |date=25 August 2021 |work=Motor Authority}}
The 2021 and 2022 exhibitions were cancelled due to the continued COVID-19 pandemic measures. The Qatari location was to be held in November 2022, but it was postponed to 2023 for the same reason.{{cite press release|url=https://www.gims.swiss/news/decisions-foundation-salon-international-de-lautomobile-future-gims|title=Decisions of the Foundation "Salon International de l'Automobile" on the Future of GIMS|publisher=Foundation "Salon International de l'Automobile"|location=Geneva, Switzerland|access-date=4 July 2020}}{{Cite web|date=7 October 2021|title=2022 Geneva International Motor Show cancelled due to pandemic issues|url=https://www.euronews.com/2021/10/07/2022-geneva-international-motor-show-cancelled-due-to-covid-19-pandemic |access-date=8 October 2021 |website=euronews|language=en}} The global chip shortage was also cited as a factor in the 2022 cancellation of Swiss location.
=2020=
The 90th Geneva Motor Show was planned for 5 to 15 March 2020, but it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Switzerland's decision to impose a limit on gatherings of over 1,000 people was cited as the reason for the cancellation.{{cite news |url=http://www.agefi.com/home/entreprises/detail/edition/online/article/les-organisateurs-ont-decide-cette-apres-midi-de-lannulation-de-la-90e-edition-du-geneva-international-motor-show-la-manifestation-internationale-devait-debuter-la-semaine-prochaine-494486.html |title=Coronavirus: le Salon de l'auto de Genève 2020 est annulé |trans-title=Coronavirus: Geneva Motor Show 2020 is canceled |first=Matteo |last=Ianni |publisher=Agefi |location=France |language=fr |date=28 February 2020 |access-date=9 March 2020 |archive-date=1 March 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200301035555/http://www.agefi.com/home/entreprises/detail/edition/online/article/les-organisateurs-ont-decide-cette-apres-midi-de-lannulation-de-la-90e-edition-du-geneva-international-motor-show-la-manifestation-internationale-devait-debuter-la-semaine-prochaine-494486.html |url-status=dead }} It was one of the first of many major automotive events to be cancelled due to COVID-19.
